THE SHOTOVER.

(from our own correspondent.) Maori Point, August 21. A public meeting was held at Bracken's store, on Tuesday last, for the purpose of electing a member to represent this district in the Permanent Committee for the Hospital at Frankton. Mr. Warden Williamson in the chair. The following resolutions were carried unanimously:— I. Moved by Mr. Peryman, seconded by Mr. Neill—" That a Provisional Committee, consisting of seven members and a secretary, bo appointed, to consist of Messrs. Williamson, C. Bracken, D. Wilson, H. Peryman, J. Stewart, C. Murphy, and Dr. Combe; and that Mr. John Anderson be appointed hon. secretary." * 11. Moved by Mr. Neill, seconded by Mr. D. Wilson—" That J. B. Bradshaw, Esq., residing in Queenstown, be appointed as member for the Permauent Committee." The Chairman then stated that subscriptions amounting to £7O 6s. had been duly handed over to Mr. Morton by Mr. Neill to be remitted to the treasurer. After a vote of thanks to the chairman, the meeting adjourned. I am in sanguine hopes that after the miners get into the river bed, the funds of the hospital will be largely augmented. In mining matters I have to report that a gully has been opened about three miles up Skipper's Creek, on the right hand side; three claims are only payable as yet. The prospectors' claim yielded 8 pennyweights to the dish. I have seen six or seven ounces of splendid gold taken out of this place. I am of opinion that were the miners here, instead of continually harping about new rushes, to steadily prospect the terraces and gullies similar to the one above alluded to, in all probability they would find better ground than is to be discovered hundreds of miles away; but the old mania is still as strong in the mining community as in the days of 1852, when men would rush frantically away from Bendigo to the Whipstick and other imaginary diggings, and be only too glad, when too late, to return to their old haunts. My advice at the present season is, if miners can make a little over current expenses, to remain where they are until the spring. The United Gold Mining Company, as also the Perseverance Company, have, for the fourth time, commenced operations in their respective races. May the Fates indeed protect them in their energetic undertaking!
