COROMANDEL.

There is little news of interest to report from Coromandel, the number of diggers at work there being somewhat lessened since the war commenced. A discovery which may prove of great importance has been made on the claim known as Murphy's and Allcock's old claim, some very good specimens being taken out of a quartz formation in their lowest drive. It is supposed to be a continuation of the same auriferous leader they had struck on the top. In the bottom, however, the stone is infinitely richer than above. By this discovery the opinion of Messrs. Murphy and Allcock, that there is payable quartz on Coolahan's Gully, has at length been proved correct. The stone has been found cropping out in the gully known as Morrises, close on the Kapanga township. It is asserted to be auriferous, and good prospects have been obtained from crushings. The formation of the stone gives it a very reef-like look. A private company has been formed to apply all possible preliminary tests before matters can be carried on, on sound mining principles. It will be termed the " Nihil Desperandum Company." About 4 tons of quartz have recently been crushed from No. 15 creek claim, and have yielded three ounces and ,ten pennyweights. The quartz had, however, been picked over by the owners previous to the crushing, otherwise the yield would have been much greater. 1801bs. weight of stone crushed from No. 5 Company yielded the other day 160ozs. of gold. 601bs. weight of fine stone yet remain uncrushed.
