THE NORTH ISLAND.
(From the Daily Times Correspondents.) WELLINGTON. Reinforcements arc said to have been sent for from Australia. There are about 1000 men to be spared from there for this emergency. The company at Otago follows suit. The Waitara has been formally abandoned by a proclamation published in both languages. This proclamation has been received with great disfavor. The reasons assigned for the abandonment are various, and the Taranaki Herald is very severe on ministers. The "circumstances" alluded to as having come to light have not yet been made public. Without any formal proclamation, the war is now an established fact, and the troops and settlers are hemmed in as of old. A letter from Mr. Domett to the Superintendent is published, in which he cautions " the settlers against going into the bush without protection." TARANAKI. For some time past, the 57th, stationed in the front, have been organising and sen ling out parties for treating with the natives in their own way, by laying ambuscades and in watching every opportunity of surprising the enemy. A partj- of about fifty men started out with the intention of cutting off any natives that might be roaming aboflt in search of prey. After crossing a river known as the Katikara, which forms the
southern boundary of the Tataraimaka blocks they saw advancing a body of natives, on which, on their nearer approach, they fired, killing several, and obtaining one body and a gun. Seven or eight are supposed to have been slain. Lieutenant Walker, at another time, led a body of men from the Poutatik to within 300 yards of the pah on the ranges,
