OIR —As the time for electing members for the Goldfields, to represent the Mining Interests in the Provincial Council of Otago is fast approaching, we, the undersigned, residents on the Shotover, earnestly request you will kindly allow yourself to be placed in nomination as our candidate for the Lake District. Dear Sir—We, the undersigned, residents on the Wakatip Goldfields, seeing the necessity of returning an intelligent and honorable man to represent us in the Provincial Council of this Province, and believing that you possess the necessary qualifications, and that you are perfectly cognizant of our wants, respectfully request that you will place yourself in nomination as a candidate, when we pledge ourselves to support you, and use our utmost efforts to return you as our representative. We remain, Sir, Your obedient servants. [Here follow 74 signatures.] BEPLT. Arthur's Point, Shotover, • May 25,1863. Gentlemen —In reply to the two numerously signed requisitions, dated from Arthur's Point, on the 19th instant, and Queenstown, on the 23rd instant, that I would allow myself to be placed in nomination as one of the candidates to represent the Mining Interest in the Provincial Council of Otago, I have great pleasure in stating that I shall be proud to do so. But, should Members for the Goldfields require the same qualification as a voter (which I doubt), viz., to be the holder of a Miner's Right for six months previous to Ist October, 1862, and to be registered, I may tell you I am not so qualified. Doubtless this question will be set at rest when the Writs for the return of Members are issued. Then should I find that any member of the community, whom you think worthy of such an honor, can be returned by you, I shall be most happy to lay my views before you. In the meantime, thanking you for the honor already conferred on me, I have the honor to remain, Yours obediently, CHAS. WILLIAMSON. To Messrs. H. Chamberlain, W. D. Hyde, G Knight, T. Arthur, W. C. Mirfin, R. Gilmour, and 121 other gentlemen signing the requisition from Arthur's Point. To Messrs. J. Gibson, J.B. Bradshaw, R. C. -Luscombe, P. McTavish, Kennedy Brothers, J.W.W. Evison, and 68 other gentlemen signing the requisition from Queenstown. 121 To the Electors of the Goldfields. circulated, that I intend to retire from the ensuing contest for a seat in the Provincial Council, is without foundation. I shall spare no efforts to make my principles known, and will meet you again before the day of election, when I hope a long practical acquaintance with the Goldfields, both as a miner and otherwise, will stand the test of that day. I am, yours respectfully, 124 H. MANDERS.
