CENTRAL BULLER FERRY.
[to the editor of the lyell times.] Sis.—At the Central Buller Ferry there is no other method for signifying your iutentiou of crossing the river either by boat or punt other than by being the possessor of a very lusty pair of lungs and, shouting out with all j-our might or of thrusting your fingers in your mouth and, being able to let out an uue irthly whistle, to call the ferryman's attention to your dasire. If you are not the possessor of the lungs referred to, and don't know how to whistle, then your position is awkard indeed, your only alternative is either to risk fouling the river, or wait till some person comes along who is the fortunate owner of the above mentioned luugs, and can whistle. The matter lam led to believe could be very easily remedied by the erection of a bell, which would be the only outlay, as a bell that was used in former years at the Matakitaki Ferry is now lying at Rowe's accommodation house, Hampden, and to all intents and purposes rusting. It is the property of the Inangahua County Council, and surely the expenditure of a few pounds should not prevent thot body from taking the matter in hand, and Adding a great convenience to the many perons who are constantly using the ferry.—l am, &c. Observer. Hampden, 9th December, 1886.
