THE MIDLAND RAILWAY.

We clip the paragraph which appears below having reference to the Midland Railway from the Lyttelton Times of Saturday last, 4th instant. The Press Association talegram which was forwarded here on Friday night stated that it was hoped that by February next operations would be in " full swing along the section," which evidently referred to that portion of the line between Brunnerton and Teremakau. The Times statement is of a far more encouraging character, the substitution of the word "line" for " section " giving a totally different reading to the sentence. Our contemporary says> Mr H. Alen Scott returned from his trip from the Coast on Thursday night. On Saturday last, in company with Messrs R. Gard'ner, Borgen, and Napier Bell, he made an inspectian of the route for tne section of line to be constructed from Brunnerten towards the Teremakau. The country is fairly level, well timbered, and will not be by any

means difficalt to work in. ' The coiltractors have been placed in possession of the land required for the track, and have accepted a tender for 2500 sleepers. These are to be used in completing a small unfinished section of line made by the Government from Brunnerton. The construction of the whole section, twenty-five miles, lias been divided by the contractors into eleven sub-contracts, tenders for which will be called forthwith. It is anticipated that operations will be in full swing all along the line by February next. - Nelson Evening Mail.
