Lyell Times. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 1886.

At the Alpine mine stoping out on the north block towards the point where the stone was struck in ;he prospecting drive is now going on, and the reef is about four feet in width. In the north end of the present working the reef appears to be making larger again. The cleaning up at the battery takes place today. We have received information that the reef was struck lust Tuesday in the lower level now being driven in the Enterprise lease at Owen reefs. Mr Smith's mare, Iri«*h Molly 0, was omitted from the list of horses entered for the District Handicap in the forthcoming Lyell and Central Bulier Race meeting. The weight she will carry in that event is 7st. 121b. Mr A. Corfield, Clerk of the K. M. and Warden's Courts will, weather permitting, be in attendance at the March'son office on Tuesday the 7th December 1886. Frank Bird, Esq., Warden, held a sitting o the Warden's Court, at Lyell, last Wednesdy, when the following applications were'dealt with. John Carroll, water race, New Creek, granted ; Ah Lnm, special site and tail race, New Creek, granted; John Carroll applied for cancellation of the double area certificate of Ah Lum and party on the grounds of noncompliance of the mining rules, having obtained the ground by misrepresentation, and holding ground in excess. Mr Moynihan appeared for the defendants. There was a considerable amount of evidence taken and cross-examination of witnesses, at the conclusion of which the Warden said that from the evidence it was quite clear that the amount of ground held by defendants had been fully manned, and from his experience he found that Chinaman were as careful and accurate in marking out ground, and otherwise conforming to the mining laws as Europeans, and with respect to the misrepresentation contention that had entirely failed, therefore the application would be refused and judgment would go for defendants with costs. At the sitting of the Resident Magistratis Court, held on Wednesday, before Bird, Esq., R. M., Mrs Pearce applied to have a previous order of the Court for maintenance against her husband cancelled, which was accordingly done. This was the only case set down for hearing. Before commencing business last Court day Frank Bird, Esq ; R. M. and Warden requested the attendance of Messrs George M-Farlane J. Lowick, and R. W 7 . M'Coy, in order to make reference to a letter that had been forwarded recently to the Minister of Justice by the former on a matter decided in Lyell Court in which J. Lowick was plaintiff and R. W. M' Coy defendant, some fourteen months ago. His Worship characterised the action as unnecessary, and underhanded and could do the writer no possible good, remarking that he (the Warden) had not the power to order the owner of the Residence area to throw open a right-of-way through the same for access to other property, however, he had ruled that way, and if the litigants were not satisfied they had their remedy at the time by appealing to the District Court. He might also mention that the writer had stated in his letter that the case had been adjudicated upon five months ago, which was a glaring misstatement, for, as a matter of fact, it was heard on 30th September last year, and further that on visiting the ground he (the Warden) had insulted him by remarking to the writer in answer to a question as to how he would gain an entrance to his section, that " in all probability he could get to it with a balloon," all that he could say was, that as the remark was made in a jocular manner, if it had insulted him he was a very touchy and thin-skinned mortal. He concluded by stating that as, the letter was written on a public matter and as he was a public servant, he considered it only right that the public should know of it, and also to show the treatment Government officials are sometimes subjected to, notwithstanding any effort they might make to deal justly with all persons. Unclaimed correspondence is now awating delivery at Lyell Post office for Alexander Murray. At the extraordinary meeting of shareholders in the Tyr Counell Quartz Mining Company, held on 23m instant, at the office of Mr J. Inghs, the directors were empowered to let portion or all the mine on tribute. Subsequently the directors met, and decided to call tenders for working that portion of the mine on tribute, for eighteen months, from No. 5 level to the north and east boundaries, tenders closing at 7 o'clock this evening. It is the intention of the Company to crosscut to the west of No. 5 level. The Hon. W. J. M. Larnach, Minister of Mines, accompanied by Mr J. Blacket, Engineer-in-Chief, arrived in Lyell last Monday, and were interviewed during the day. Among other matters the desirability of Government procuring the paddock alongside £<yell Creek as a recreation ground for the inhabitants was favourably entertained. Mr Blacket assured the deputation that, the plans and specifications for bridge at Larsen's punt were now ont of hands and that tenders would shortly be called for the work. This terminated a most courteous and friendly interview, and the visitors left for the Owen reefs under the guidance of Mr M. Byrne. During the morning the hon Mr Larnach visited the workings of the Alpine mine.

We have received a letter from Fern Flat dealing in a very able manner with subject of the disappearance of Edward Smithers, and the drowning of the young girl Whale, but as the suggestions thrown out in both cases have already been adopted by Constable Bowden, and do not think it necessary to publicly hurt the feelings of those interested by publishing the correspondence in question, but had the matters not been taken in hand by the police as stated we certainly should have ventilated the matter. The directors of the United Italy met on Monday evening last, at Mr liV&lis' office, and decided to call fresh tenders, closing this svening, tor GO feet extension of crosscut from Putter's level to the east ward. On his return to Lyell from the Owen reefs district Mr M. Byrne informed us that the Hon. W. J. M. Larnach, Miuister of Mines, had visited that locality, and had spared no pains to make himself thoroughly acquainted with its mineral prospects, and the agricultural resources of that part of the country through which the road passes. The fict of his visit will undoubtedly prove of great benelit, for at any future time if any requirement of the district is placed before him lie-tall? more readily couceive the nature of ilv and will be able to give the matter a; speedier consideration. ~: The Rev. Mr Innes-Jones/will conduct' Divine Services in St. Mathew's Church, Lyell, on Friday evening next and the following Sunday morning, at the usual hours. We direct attention to an advertisement appearing in this issue to the effect that the Bank of New South Walea has taken the premises formerly occupied by the Bank of New Zealand, and purpose open ing a branch from Thursday, 2nd, to Saturday, 4th December. The melting house at the rear of the office will be opened on Friday, and the'gold bought at the highest price obtainable for melted gold in the Bulier district. We understand that it is the intention of this to open for a few days fortnightly, ot weekly, if found necessary, for the purpose of melting gold and transacting general banking business. This should prove a great convenience tojgold miners and the public generally. Due notice will always be given of the date on which the Bank will be open. The election of a Count}- Chairman, Inangahua for the ensuing twelvemonth took place at the Council Chambers. Reefton, on Wdnesday last. All the Councillors were present. Cr. J. C. Craig was proposed by Cr. Lynch and seconded by Cr. MGinley. Cr Campbell inoyed an amendment that Cr. W. Irving be elected County Chairman, which yyas seconded by Cr, Twohill there voted for the amendment Cambeil, Twohill, Irving ; and for the motion that Cr. Craig be County Chairman, Crs. Lynch Duncan, M'Giuley, Gardner and Cruig. tiie motion was declared carried. The accounts from Big Bay are exceedingly contradictory, so much so that it is almost impossible to arrive at any satis factory conclusion. While some say that they can do fairly will, they are altogether outnumbered by those who say there is nothing to be got, or that the average earnings is not more than 6s per week. Provisions' are plenty and cheap, and the country is getting a thorough prospecting; but from the traces found inland in the shape of blazes and the remains of old caps, the country must have been more or less prospected between 30 and 22 years ago. The color can be obtained almost anywhere, but nothing in the shape of an auriferous deposit has been yet found. At th? Church of England Synod ]uV, concluded at Nelson, the Rev. Mr Mactaan was appointed Arch-Deacon ot the diocese of the West Coast. Nowhere throughout his district will "the rev. gentleman be more warmly congratulated upon his preferment than by his former parishoners in the Inangahua. (Inangahua Times)
