Mining Notices. APPLICATION FOR LEASE. Nelson South-west Goldfields, November 18th, 1886. To the Warden at Lyell— I HEREBY apply for a Gold-Mining Lease of the lands hereinafter described, in accordance with the GoldMining Leases Regulations ot New Zealand, and I agree, upon the approval of this application, to execute a lease upon the basis therein stated, if the Governor shall think fit to grant the same. Extent of ground applied for—Sixteen and a-half acres. Minimum number of men proposed to be employed by the lessee —For the first three months, 2 men; subsequently, when in full work, 6 men. Amount of capital proposed to be invested —£12,000. Proposed mode of working the land.— Ordinary mode of quartz mining. Precise locality— Alpine Range Lyell distiict. Bounded on the South by the United Alpine Special Claim and Crown lands* on the east by the Twi- j light lease, on the north and west by Crown lands. Term for which lease is* required—ls years. Time of commencing operations—When lease is granted.

The above application and any objection thereto will be heard at the' Warden's Office at Lyell, on WEDNESDAY, the 19th JANUARY, 1887. NOTICE is hereby given That out of the revenue available for Secondary Education, the Nelson School Commissioners have decided to offer for yearly competition THREE SCHOLARSHIPS at the Nelson Girls' College of the annual value of Twelve Pounds Ten Shillings, tenable for two vears. All girls under the age of sixteen years who have resided in the Nelson Provincial District during the two years previous to the date of competition will be eligible as competitors to scholarships. Regularity of attendance, good behaviour, and due diligence in the prosecution of her studies, shall be essential to the continued holding of a Scholarship, and a certificate from the Lady Principal stating that these conditions have been fulfilled will be required each quarter. The subjects of examination will be Geography, English History, English, including Dictation, and Arithmetic. The Papers will be similar in character to those set for the Junior Civil Service examinations. Particulars of time and place of examination in a future advertisement. H. C. DANIELL, Secretary.
