MINING NEWS.
OWEN REEFS DISTRICT. (from our own correspondent.) Owen, October 7th. During tlift past fortnight everything seems to have taken a more lively turn. We have been visited by bank managers, mino managers and finance managers, in fact all sorts of managers on the look out for a slice of the cut loaf. Men of experience in mining matters will always receive a welcome from us, but I must state that a crowd of people have come in here and have gone out without seeing anything of the field, and then without the slightest reason have given the distiict a poor name. However, lam proud to say the field can hold its own and the people connected with it will sink or swim with it. is!ow for the mines: Bulmer Creek Company.—ln extending the crosscut a large body of stone has been cut in the solid country and shows a fair sample of gold. From the main tunnel 50 feet has been driven and throughout its entire course alternate leaders and mullock bauds have been met with. Wakatu United. —This claim is looking very healthy. A good reet has been met with in the main crosscut at a disstance of 218 feet from the start of the tunnel. It was then followed for 12 feet in a westerly course and then suddenly crossed the drive and assumed her true bearing. Payable gold was found throughout. The tunnel is still beiug pushed ahead to catch the underlie of the Wakitu reef; according to a recent calculation this should be accomplished at a distance of 120 feet from the present face. Enterprise Extended. Driving ahead the 100 feet level in medium soft country. At the rate they are driving at present I expect to see the footwall of the reef in about two mouths. I notice by the Nelson papers that the Public Crushing Company is now almost an established fact. Good luck to the promoters as it will certainly enhance the value of this district. We must note that Mr William Kearns, of Lyell, arrived here with the first dray and load ever brought up the Owen River. He was under charter to Mr E. Carroll who is putting up an exteifsive hotel at Flower's Flat.
