Notwithstanding the many theatres, now built in London, and are losing concerns, it is stated that the Jersey Lily, Mrs. Langtry, contemplates building a theatre for herself, and is now actually negotiating for the purchase of a site in Shaftesbury Avenue, the new London thoroughfare, which is going to become one of the finest and most popular in the metropolis. At the old Theatre Eoyal, Melbourne, on the third of June, 1851, in aid of " The Shakespeare Testimonial," an amateur performance was given. "The Merchaut of Venice the • piece de resistance, the characters being sustained by the following members of Parliament : -Messrs. George Selth Coppin (member of the Legislative Council), Howard, Lock, Donald, Vincent Pyke, Wilkie, Dr. Hedley, M. L. King, and Carpenter (members of the Legislative Assembly). The principal ladies of the theatre company assisted, including Mrs. Robert Heir, who sustained the role of Portia. Of the gentlemen who appeared in the performance the only two now living are Mr. Vincent Pyke and Mr. G. Coppin.
