Watkins, C.E., arrived by coach on Thursday, and is now engaged layiug off the bearings for No. 7 level, the contractors for same having completed all preliminary works, and are now ready for starting the tunnel. A representative from the Bank of New South Wales, Westport, will arrive in Lyell next Thursday, remaining until the following morning.

The following leases having been objected to by the Buller County Council, the Nelson Land Board refused:—H. Burley and G. Walker, islands in the Buller River.; J. Norman, 20 acres, Buller Valley; F. Gill, 50 acres Buller Valley ; W. Mailman, 100 acres, Buller Valley ;J. Fennell, 5 acres, Lyell. The application of Henry Hurford for an oc cupation license of reserve, 94 A., Hampden, suburban, was refused. The entertainment and ball in connexion with the local branch of the Irish National League will take place next Friday evening. Every present indication is favourable to a most successful gathering and a good evening's amusement. The interest taken in the ball by the ladies is evidenced by the fact that the local dressmakers were unable to meet the demand on their services, consequently costumes have been ordered from Nelson and Westport.

At the Tyr Connell miue active stoping operations are going on, yielding stoue similar to that taken out for some time past. It is the intention of the directors to start crushing at the Croesus battery about the end of August. The parcel of stone ready for treatment then will be about forty tons. A very nasty accident occurred to Mr William Hanna, carrier on the Westport road, last Wednesday evening. He was engaged shifting some loading at the top of the waggon, when he lost his hold, and fell a distance of ten feet on the hard metal road. For about an hour it was feared that Mr Hanna had sustained some severe internal injuries, having apparently lost his speech, and found some difficulty in breathing; however, at the end ot that time and during the night he became better, and was enabled to drive his team into Lyell the following morning. A very sad case, resulting fatally, occurred at White's Poiut yesterday. Mrs George White, the mother of a large and young family, beiDg near her confinement, and the case presenting very critical symptoms, l)r Gaze of Westport was telegraphed for, and arrived at 1 o'clock a.m. on Friday, but too late to save the sufferer's life, and death took place after great suffering half an hour subsequent to the doctor's arrival. Dr Gaze stated that even had he been summoned earlier it is exceedingly doubtful if medical appliances or skill could have availed, the case beiug so dangerous. The greatest sympathy is felt for Mr White and his family in their sad bereavement. Mr liobinson, one of the contractors for the first section of the Midland Railway, arrived in Greymouth during the week, his first business being to take a look over the ground.

The usual sittings of the Resident Magistrate's and Warden's Courts will be held at Lyell, on Wednesday next.

The members of the local Irish National League are requested to meet to-morrow at 3 o'clock p.m. at Fennell's Hall. We direct attention to Mr George Hooper's advertisement in first page, notifying removal to new premises in Trafalgar street, Nelson. Mr J. S. Smith, the well known entrepreneur, is now in Westport making arrangements for the appearance of Coghill's American Minstrels (15 performers), just from America. It is their intention to yisit Lyell after their season there. We, Nelson Evening Mail, understand that there is at present two or three gentlemen from Auckland on a visit to the Nelson district for the purpose of making enquiries relative to the mineral deposits in various parts. They will probably take a look at the Owen reefs before returning, and may possibly take a run over to Collingwood. At the last meeting of the luaagahua County Council the following business relating to this district was transacted From R. M'Nee, stating that the committee of the Hampden Athenaeum had secured a freehold on which to erect a reading room, and asking for a subsidy; on the motion of Crs. Lynch and Gardner, it was resolved that a subsidy of £ for £ on the amount subscribed be granted up to <£3o. From W. Hunter, Hampden, enclosing order from A. Smith re punt. From B. M,Gee, inquiring relative to money due by the Corncil to H. Duggin. From J. O'Dea, referring the County Chairman to his solicitor for any further correspondence re the Newton bridge accident.
