Steps are being taken by the citizens of Toronto to erect a statue of Queen Victoria in commemoration of the fiftieth year of her reign. A collector of the curious announces that Mary continues to be the favourite name for girls, Anna comes second, Elizabeth is third, Laura is fourth.

All property captured during the late Burmese war is to be sold, the proceeds being applied towards defraying the expenses of the campaign. Of persons in England and Wales professing'to be 100 years or more, there were —In 1841, 213 ; in 1851, 215; in 1861, 201 ; in 1871, 160 ; in 1881, 141. In England 18 per cent of children j in the upper classes, 36 per cent of those of tradespeople, and 55 per cent of workmen's children, die before reaching their fifth birthday. In acquiring Burmah, England has . got possession of vast forests of teak, which, never plentiful in India, was becoming commercially very rare. It is recorded that a Russian convict in Siberia was sentenced to a flogging, received 2000 lashes, and survived. The head of the Jesuit order has published the statistics of the order, showing that it counts 2500 fnissionaries, and that it can boast of having had 248 saints, 1500 martyrs, 13 popes, 60 cardinals, 4000 archbishops and bishops, and 6000 authors. A Rhinelander, living at Niehl, has within the last eleven months received a remarkable addition to his family, his wife having twice presented him with a trio of infants.
