The United Alpine directors met on Thursday and declared the usual monthly dividend of one shilling per 32,000 th share, equal to £I6OO, payable on and after to day. The cleaning-up took place at the battery on Wednesday and resulted in 6310z5. of retorted gold from 803 tons of stone treated for the month. The usual amount of stoping has been carried on in the mine. In the south end of the mine some difficulty has been met with in the mullock horses. A new make of stone is coming in here in the foot wall, which has every appearance of cutting out die mullock, an occurence which took place some time ago in the north end of the mine. The cross-cut west No. 6 level, 80 feet back from the face, is now in 10 feet, and the manager intends taking in another 15 feet, and should no favorable country be met with in that distance it is his intention to cross-cut to the eastward. The hands have been engaged this week on filling in operations. The tailing site at the battery now being completed stacking tailings will be commenced. The contractors for the head race have six men employed, and are making fair progress. The directors of the United Italy have decided to suspend operations in the shaft for the present, and will, we believe, put in a cross-cut to the eastward, for the purpose of cutting a large gold-bearing reef known to exist in that part of their mine. Taking in a drive in this direction will intercept the leaders of the Bon Accord and the Maruia.
The following urgent weather telegram was received this morning at 11.49 a.m. from Captain R. A. Mr E. B. Garven returned from Hampden on Wednesday, having got through a large amount of county engineering work in that district, and also visited the Owen portion of the county. Mr John Campbell has met with another misfortune, having lost a valuable horse last week, near Fern Flat. The animal, while grazing in the vicinity of a tailrace, slipped in, and having fallen on her back was uuable to extricate herself. This loss now makes the fourth of a similiar character sustained by Mr Campbell during the past twelvemonths, representing in a monetary value over £ioo.
Messrs Newman Brothers complain very frequently of the state of the "road between Lyeil and Eight-mile. The driver is compelled to exercise great care when crossing the various culverts, the timber of which are all now in a state of decay, and are positively dangerous. There are also several places where slips have come down, and there being no labour employed on the road, are allowed to remain there an impediment to traffic. We believe that some provision will be made for the maintenance of these roads, during the present session, and the sooner the better, as it is becoming every day more apparent that the County Council is not in a position to do justice to the work.
Mr I Lewis, manager of the National Bank, Reefton, will be in attendance at the Lyell branch to-day.
Alteration in the N.Z. Clothing Factory advertisement, Westport, will appear in next issue.
