Lyell Times. SATURDAY, MAY 22, 1886.

At the last sitting of the Warden's Court Mr Bird gave notice that in future all persons to whom certificates for Gold Mining Leases are granted will be required to take them up and pay the fees due within a week from the date of such grant, otherwise the certificates will bs forfeited without any notice. We draw the attention of our upcountry readers to the fact that the Annual Licensing Meeting for the district of Hampden will be held at the CourtHouse, Murchioon, o i Tuesday, the Ist day of June 1886, at the hour of 12 o'clock noon. The Clerk of the Resident Magistrate's and Warden's Courts will be in attendance at the Murchison Office, on Tuesday, the Ist dav of June, for the transaction of any business in connection with the Courts ... mentioned. Tenders close this evening at Mr Inglis' Office tor clearing playground, repairing fence, and erecting bridge in connection with the Lyell school-house. The time of closing is fixed for 7 o'clock. There is nothing of importance to chronicle from any of our mines for the past week. The United Alpine is still maintaining the usual steady output of stone, and driving ahead for north block, ft while at the battery crushing is being carried forward without interruption; works in connection with the water supply to battery and tailing site are being pushed ahead vigorously. At the Tyr Counell good stone is still coming to hand. The Larnach has not yet developed any i further encouraging indications. At the Italy mine the men engaged sinking are making good progress. In the tributors portion of the Italy mine there was something struck recently, but it wasn.t a reef; the report will be found elsewhere. The

manager of the Manuka Flat tunnel is still driving a-head with rock and gravel alternating as last reported. Indications in the Low Level Tunnel have been more favonrable for the past month, the driving being softer, going through a likely slate country, with pug seams coming in. The two private companies, the Maruia and Bon Accord leader claims, on the Eightmile, are, considering the width of their stone, bringing a fair amount of quartz to grass.

Heavy rain set in last Wednesday night, accompanied by strong gales. The Buller river since then has been considerably swollen. The mails from the south on Thursday, and northwards on Friday, did not come through. Today's mails from south are expected, when the coaches will take up their usual running. A very pleasant gathering took place at Fennell's Empire llotel, last Monday evening, for the purpose of bidding farewell to Mr Thomas Walsh, (Mr Fennell's nephew) prior to his departure for the North Island. About 30 guests sat down and did ample justice to the good things provided. The Chairman, Mr W. Atkin, briefly referred to the guest of the evening, and proposed his health and prosperity. The toast was enthusiastically drank, and after being duly responded to by Mr Walsh, the company enjoyed themselves by singing, reciting, and speech-making, until the we sma' hours. When they dispersed one and all agreed that they bad spent one of the most pleasant evenings yet experienced in the L} T ell. On the following day over 50 residents waited in town for the coach, in order to wish Mr Walsh good-bye; several of his more intimate friends from the mines having lost a shift for that purpose. Mr Walsh has not enjoyed good health in Lyell during his stay of nearly four years, and it is his intention to visit the North Island, in order to regain that robust health which he brought here with him.

The weekly partial cleaning at the Alpine battery from ripples, plates and berdans took place yesterday, and resulted as follows:—336ozs. of amalgam from 184 tons of stone treated. There has been a few slight stoppages at the battery during the week owing to the flooded state of the creek.

Mr E. B. Garven, Inangahua County Engineer, arrived at Lyell on Wednesday on his usual tour for inspection of the county roads and works. Owing to the flooded state of the rivers he has been detained here since, but expects to get away to-day, the weather having moderated.

Mr J. E. Gillespie, Buller County Collector, did not put in an appearance yesterday at Lyell, owing to the flooded state of the rivers.
