Lyell Times. SATURDAY, MAY 15, 1886.
The United Alpine cleaned up for the ■week yesterday. The battery ran for seven days sixteen hours, and put through 2HG tons of stone, with a result of 4G9ozs of amalgam.
Frank Bird, Esq., R.M.. reached Lyell yesterday evening, and will hold sittings ot the Resident Magistrate's and Warden's Courts this morning at 11 o'clock. At the inquest held it Boatman's during the early part of the week touching the death of two men in the Welcome mine, the jury returned the following verdict:—" That Patrick Biron and William Ryan met their death in the Welcome mine, at Boatman's, on Sunday, May 9th, 188(>, by suffocation caused by inhaling fumes or gasses, and from exhaustion caused by an error of judgment 011 their part by not carrying out the directions of the manager, who is exonerated from all blame." The following rider was added: 44 That iu future the men employed in cleaniug the flue be supplied with lanterns or Davy lamps, and that the Company be asked to furnish escape doors at all the levels, and also to furnish a small chain or wire (covered with gutta-percha) in the flue or the better protection of life." The weather yesterday was very cold, snow having fallen on the higher range? in the vicinity of Lyell. At Ziktown +!]<-• snow was four inches in thickness.
There has been nothing of any importance taking place in any of onr mines this week. The Alpine is maintaining the usual output of stone, and have not yet cut the north block. At the Tyr Council the same quality of stone is being taken out, and the men at the Italy have not yet discovered anything, although making good progress with the shaft. The face in the Low Level Tunnel is getting into softer country, and consequently driving is easier. The Larnach has njt made much progress since last 4 report.
There was a meeting of the Lyell School Committee last Monday at Mr Inglis' office, all the members being present. The treasurer reported having received - the sum of £'l 10/- from the teacher for books. It was resolved that the visiting committee draw up specifications tor clearing ground and repairs to fence around the scl 001, and bridge over creek to same, in order that tenders be called at an early date. This terminated the business.
