Sydney, April 27. A conference on the question of joint Australian defence lias commenced its sittings. The following were the representatives present:—Sir Patrick Jennings (Premier of New South Wales), Mr Gillies, (Premier of Victoria), Mr Griffiths, (Premier of Queensland) and Admiral Tryon (for the Imperial Government). Nothing has been learnt as to what took place, the proceedings having been kept secret. Sydney, April 28. The following is the result of the running for the SYDNEY CUP. ELECTION of SCHOOL COMMITTEE A meeting of the honselioMors of the Lyell school district was hel.l at tho schoolroom, on Tuesday evening last, for the piiqK)se of receiving Keporfc and Balance Sheet from the outgoing Committee, and electing Committee for the ensuing twelvemonths. Mr Jatneb Inglis was called to the Chair, and read the lteport and Balance Sheet
It was moved by Mr Fenneli, seconded by Mr Carroll, aud carried, 44 That tiio B port and Balance Sheet as received be adopted.
Nominations for a committee were then received, when the following ten gentlemen were proposed: Messrs Inglis, M'Coy, Holman, Lowick, Peck, Brecn t Bray, Mason, Mairs, Edge.
Messrs Fenneli and Atkin were appointed to conduct the eleetion, and declared the result of the poll as follows: Charles Holman, 113022211325111212

It was proposed by Mr Edge, seconded by Mr Lowick, and carried, 4k That Mr James Inglis bo chairman for tlio ensuing year." Proposed by Mr Edge, seconded by Mr Bray, and carried, 44 Tiiat Mr M'Coy act as secretary. On the motion of Mr M'Coy, seconded bv Mr Edge, Mi Inglis was appointed treasurer. Messrs Inglis and M'Coy were empowered to si„n cheques on behalf of the committee. The time for holding the monthly meeting was fixed 'o: the second Monday in each month. A letter was read and received from Mr John Breen.
Messrs and Peck were appointed a visiting committee, and i istruited to inquire into the charge contained in Mr Breen's letter against the teacher, and report the same to the committee at their next meeting 10th May. This terminated the business.
