Vessel onher beam eiuK Two passengers have been washed ashore. It is believed al iives are lost. Latest particulars regarding the Paiaroa disaster would indicate likelihood •f serious fatality. The steamer leflj .Vell'Jigtou ut noon yesterday. In evenng a southerly gale came up, driving the iteamcr ashore on a gravelly beach on - niie north of Clarence River. Two" passengers alone were washed ashore. IJoat containing captain and ten men irrived at Wairau bar, Blenheim, at 2. o'clock this afternoon. She hal been blown out to sea, but made land again Of twenty-nine persons, including mate, stewardess and five women, who lefi the wreck in one boat, and which capsized sixteen miles from wreck, only one man has as yet turned up. The Penguin left Wellington, at 11 this forenoon for scene of disaster. Captain's name is Thompson. Exact scene of mishap, is between Kaikoura and Cape Campbell, 87 miles south of latter place.
As far as is at present known there were 47 souls on board the s.s. Taiaroa when she grounded, 30 passengers and 17 of a crew. There are 14 saved aud 33 missimr. Three ladies were saloon passengers: Mrs FitzGerald, wife of the editor of the Timaru Herald; Mrs Garner, and Mrs Gibbs; also, Mr Vallance, the sporting m in. The vessel is well in shore, with about six foot of water in the saloon but very little in the fore part.
