Mr Douthett returned by coach from Nelson on Wednesday, informs us that his wife has undergone a clever operation at the Hospital there. The gentlemen performing the operation were Drs Coleman .and Locking. The disease was cancer and necessitated the complete removal of the right breast, and the operation was performed in an entirely successful manner, so much so that it is anticipated that Mrs Douthett will be discharged in four weeks.

Mrs O'Loughlin of Fern Flat, intends, in about three week's time, opening an accommodation house at the Owen reefs. The want of a house of this class has recently been felt at Owen in consequence of the large number of people visiting the reefs, and Mrs O'Loughlin's management of the hotel on Fern Flat for the past three years should provide a sufficient guarantee that the wants of travellers visiting Owen will be well attended to. Information respecting the whereabouts and occupation of the undermentioned person is wanted by the Secretary of the General Post Office :—J. A. Crofts. His wife inquires from Grove Hill, Woodford, England. She last addressed him at Wellington, about March last. The contractors in the United Italy resumed operations last Monday, and are making good progress sinking on the reet.
Another instance of the advantage of having a medical gentleman among us occurred this week. A miner named John M'Williams, returning home with a bottle lantern slipped, and in falling his arm came in contact with the broken glass causing a very severe contused wound and serious laceration to the muscles of the arm. Had not Dr Levien been here the patient would undoubtedly have b en put to the expense of a visit to either Reefton or Westport.
Considerable amusement was caused yesterday evening by the appearance of a " Cheap John " vendor, who displayed and sold a varied assortment of fancy goods at prices ranging from a shilling upwards. He will continue his sale this evening.
The usual sittings of the Resident Magistrate's and Warden's Courts will take place on Wednesday next, the 17th instant. The business set down for hearing at present is unimportant.
