Mr A. A. Corfield, clerk of the Resident Magistrate's and Warden's Courts, will be in attendance at the Murchison office on Tuesday next, 9th instant. Mails close for United Kingdom. Continent of Europe, and United States of America via San Francisco, on Thursday, 20th instant. Money orders for San Francisco mail will be issued up to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, 23rd instant. We understand that His Excellency the Governor is now paying a visit to the West Coast, and will arrive in Westport this morning, remaining till the evening, from whence it is reported he intends proceeding to Wellington by the Hinemoa.
Mr Larsen had his punt once more in the water on Thursday last at 1 o'clock. Newman Bros are now bringing through their large coach, and the delay of an hour caused during the time that the punt was being repaired is now at an end.
MrT. Thompson, Buller County Engineer visited Lyell on Saturday last for the purpose of inspecting various works in the riding, and passing the section of Lyell-Mokihinui road just completed by Blakely and party. He expressed himself as highly pleased with the manner in which these contractors had performed their work.
As ouly five gentlemen were nominated at Hampden last Monday to constitute the Licensing Committee for the ensuing twelve months, there was no election. The following are the members: Donald M'Gregor, Owen Lynch, Charles Downie, William Hunter and Thomas Kerr. The first meeting for election of Chairman will take place on Tuesday 9th March, at 12 noon.
Mrs Douthett, who left Lyellfor Nelson last Saturday under advice from Dr.. Levien, underwent a painful operation on Thursday at the Hospital there*' The i disease Mrs Douthett is suffering from is a very dangerous one, known as cancer in the breast. The operation consisted in complete amputation. Tenders were opened on Tuesday last for supply of mining goods and carting for the United Alpine Company, when the tender of Mr James Ryan was accepted for supply of mining goods, that of Mr G. Holloway for carting from Westport to Lyell, and Mr W. Reams' for carting from Lyell to battery and mine.
Mr Eowe, of Mnrchison, has now got his footbridge over Matakitaki river completed and open for The establishment of this means of cominunicaton will prove a great boon to the residents of Mnrchison and surrounding districts; and the energetic and determined manner in which Mr Howe has in the face of many difficulties succeeded in completing this work, reflects the highest credit upon him.
The adjourned sports and pic-nic at Murchison were in every respect a thorough success, everyone from the surrounding districts attending. The lunchpon and tea are spoken of in the highest terms of approbation by returning visitors. A most enjoyable day was spent, and the only incident which marred the festivities took place in a jumping match in which a son of Mr Miles Dickson sustained a fracture of the arm. Dr Levien, of Lyell, was communicated with by telegram from Longford, but owing to having several critical cases in hand was unable to leave, and replied to bring the patient to Lyell. The following business in connection with the Hampden riding was transacted at the last meeting of the Inangahua County Council:—! 1 . O'Rourke's claim for compensation in connection with maintenance contract from O'Longhlin's, Fern Flat, to Gibbs', Longford, after considerable discussion was, on the amendment of Cr. Craig, settled by allowing the sum of £25. From the Mines Department asking whether the Council intend to undertake the survey of the Owen road, if not the department will take it in hand. A petition from 40 inhabitants of Matakitaki, asking for the construction of one and a-half miles of road in that Hiding; Cr. Duncan said there was a large tract ol country between Blackwater and Snowy which needed opening up; after some discussion the matter was held over till next meeting; Cr. Lynch referred to the importance of the work asked for by the inhabitants of Hampden; the Engineer said the work would be a rather expensive one, and would cost probably £5 per chain ; Cr. Lynch had been told by the inhabitants that the work could be done for about ,£300; Resolved on the motion of Cr. TowhiH that the Engineer enquire and report upon the matter to the next meeting of the Council. Mr W. TT. Brown, of Charleston, has been promoted to the charge of the Bank
of New Zealand, Eumara. He is succeeded by Mr Mason. The Charleston people have presented Mr Brown with a testimonil and a purse of sovereigns and Mrs Brown with a handsome bracelet.
