OPEN COLUMN.

Our columns are open to the discussion of all matters of public interest, but we are in no way identified with the views of our correspondents. EVIDENCE BY THE POLICE. (TO THE EDITOR OF THE LYELL TIMES.) Sib,—Referring to the recent case of the Police v. Carroll, the Constable thought proper to make a remark in Court that there were no Alpine men boarding or frequenting my house ; but there may be a few Tyr Connell men patronising the house. Now, Sir, I think this is a serious reflection on me and the Alpine men, for it is a notorious fact that the inference is that those miners if they wish to continue in the Alpine mine, frequent but one hotel in the town. Now, I deny this, and I consider the remark of Constable Bowden, as uncalled for, and that he exceeded the privilege of his position in making such a statement in a public Court. Yours truly, Edward Carroll. Lyell, 22nd January, 1885. While freely giving insertion to the above, we are of opinion that our correspondent is incorrect in his statement with respect to the Alpine men. Our notes show that the evidence given, by the constable referred to miners generally, which he afterwards qualified by saying that some of the Tyr Connell men frequented the house. ' Ed. L.T.
