Lyell Times. SATURDAY, JANUARY 23, 1886.
The usual weekly partial cleaning up at the Alpine battery was maie yesterday, when for five "day's crushing, the plates, ripples aud berdans gave 380 ounces o( amalgam from 170 tons of stone. The battery was temporarily delayed in the beginning of the week's crushing owing to the breakage of two stamper shanks. The children attending the State School resume their duties on Monday, 25th instant. JVJr F. G. Rottou arrives by coach ironi Nelson to-morrow.
We are advised that Mr H. Martinson, photographer, of Trafalgar street, Nelson, intends paying Lyell a short visit, and will arrive by Nelson coach to-morrow. This gentleman enjoys the reputation of a first-class artist, and as he will bring with him all the latest improvements and appliances in connection with the photographic art, his visit to Lyell should be taken advantage of. * Larsen's punt, crossing Buller near Lyell, is now laid up for repairs, and Mr Larsen is having the work pushed ahead as rapidly as possible. Messrs Newman Brothers are running an extra coach from Fern Flat, meetiugthe lieefton and Westport coach at the crossing. Two buggies and pair passed through Lyell southwards on Thursday, and were taken over by means of beat. It is expected the punt will be in working order in about ten days.
We have received information from Father J. B. Holland, dated Nelson yesterday, that he will arrive at Lyell this evening, and conduct Masses at the usual hours to-morrow (Sunday.)
We remind our readers that the entertainment in aid of the establishment of Hospital- at Lyell takes place in the Schoolroom next Thursday. Judging by the interest taken in rehearsals and the proficiency already attained by those taking part in the concert we can safely guarantee a good evening's amusement. At the termination of the concert the room will be cleared for dancing, and a bar will be opened in the interests of the institution.
Frank Bird, Esq., K.M. and Warden held Courts at Murchison on Tuesday last, when the following business was disposed of: —Uno Company, Owen river, protection for water i ace, granted; Thos. Baxter, water race at Matakitaki, granted; M. BjTne, special machine site at Owen river, granted; P. O'Hagan, protection for claim at Fern Flat, granted ; E. Bunu, water race, granted;: D. Dunlop, water race, granted; J. O'Dea, protection for claim at Fern Flat, granted ; J. O'Neill, tail race, granted ; A. H. Husband, water race, Fern Flat, grafted; C. Bulmer, special machine site at Owen river, granted The following gold mining leases at Owen river were adjourned for survey: M. Byrne, Golden Point and Golden Crown Companies; S. J. Beeves, Bonanza Company. There was only one case in the Magistrate's Court, Beamsley v. Kelly, for which judgment was entered for Jfc9 with 15s costs.
J. S. Browning, Esq., Chief Surveyor for Nelson district, passed through Lyell on Thursdry ou an official tour to Mokilunui.
At the United Italy the contractors, Quiulan and party, have concluded their engagement tor driving main tunnel a distance of 50 feet along the line of reef without meeting the run of stone as anticipated. The directors meet to-night, when probably tenders will be invited for further driving of the tunnel. Operations at the Tyr Connell mine comprise driving No. 4 ahead to connect with the top stope. It is expected that communication will be complete early next week, when additional hands will be put on to stope out and send down stone, which carries excellent gold. In No. 5 level the hands are now rising on the leader south of the "break," which also shows gold freely. Seven men are employed in this mine altogether.
We understand that Mr William Walsh is about making application to the Buller County Council for supply of wire rope for a chair crossing Buller river at a point on the Nelson road known as the Government Clearing. This me ins of communication commands a large and wellknown auriferous district surrounding Little Deep Dale Creek, and one that has been almost neglected lately by prospectors owing to its difficulty of access. Under the new Justices of the Peace Act, Justices are empowered to dispose of civil cases in which the claims do not exceed £2O.
H. Gordon, Inspector ot Mines, has been elected a Fellow ot the Geological Society. A report reached Saturday's Hokitika Times that a nugget ot goid, weighing live ounces, had been picked up at Larrikin's, Kumara, near the surface.
Hamilton Gilmer, (nephew of Mr John Gilmer, of Westport) is the winner of one of the Wauganui Collegiate School Scholarships. He is a Terrace School, Wellington, boy.
