Lyell Times. SATURDAY, JANUARY 9, 1886.

The United Alpine cleaned up for the month last Saturday, with the result of 814 ounces retorted gold from 800 tons ot stone. The directors met on Wednesday and declared the usual dividend payable on and after to-day. The Rev. Father Rolland will arrive at Lyell this evening, and will hold Mas* to-morrow at the usual hour. As already announced a representative of the National Bank, from Reefton, will be in attendance at Lyell to-day for the transaction of general banking business. The Rev. Innes Jones Church of England Minister, of Reefton, will conduct Divine Service, at Lyell, on Friday even- j lng next, 15th instant, remaining here ' until Sunday morning, when he will hold morning service, after which he proceeds to Reefton. Two parcels of stoue brought down from the Bulmer Creek claim, Own, were crushed at the Bank of New Zealand, Nelson, recently, and the results were tested in the presence of Mr James Kirton and Mr Ancell. Each parcel weighed about 71bs, one having been obtained from the five-foot reef 300 feet lower down than where it was first struck in the cross-cut, and the other from a twofoot reef forming part of twenty-loot reef, but which is divided by nine feet of slate. 90 feet west of that whence the first portion was got out. The former yielded at the rate of4ozs2dwts, and the latter of 3ozs to the ton. The gold must have permeated the stone in very fine particles, for a representative of the Mail who was present at the crushing failed to discover, even with the aid of a magnifying glass, a particle of the precious metal, which, however, was proved to exist in a very considerable quantity. Mr J. Y. Ellery, the mining manager, is very hopeful of a bright future being in prospect for the Company, who certainly have the best wishes of the people of Nelson for their success.

The Nelson coach arrived at Lyell fast I night at 10 o'clock, having experience!! the greatest difficulty in getting throne iR The entire road from the Motupiko Val l evX to the Hope Valley, a distance of 40 miles is a raging hush fire. The passengers and driver had to clear the road in several places of fallen trees, and underwent great difficulty in miking the journey with safety to the mails and horses. Several settlers along the road are heavy losers, in one instance a valuable threshing machine having been consumed and great exertions were made to save buildings and crops. The Newman Brothers deserve the thanks of the mail d'stricts affected for their endeavours in bringing the mails through. Tlx coach re ichrd Lyell. as stated, at 10 p.m. and it was only at the earnest, solicition of tho passengers that Mr G. Newmav decided to discontinue the journey until morning, as he would have to go 0" without 'lights, having in the confusion forgotten them at Motupiko. We notice in our last G(V3rnment Gnzettee, to hand, that in pursuance of Section $1 of " The Public Health Act," the Governor of the Colony of New Zea land has proclaimed that the Colony of Queensland is infected with the disease known as Cholera, being an infection or contageous disease highly daugerous to the health of the people.

This district is now undergoing one of the dry est seasons yet known, all the small creeks fast drying up, and in fact the Lyell Creek supply has necessitated the temporary stoppage of 5 heads at the Alpine battery. We have great pleasure in announcing to the residents of this district the arrival of a medical gentleman in our midst in the person of Mr George E. Levien, late of Havelock, Marlborough district, where he has been in practice for the last twenty years. Mr Levien has been recommended to this district by the Rev. T. B. Maclean, and from a close inspection of his numerous testimonials and credentials we have no hesitation in arriving at the conclusion that he will be found in every way suitable for the requirements of this and the surrounding localities. Besides being a member of the Pharmaceutical Society and Pharmaceutical Conference of Great Britain, and a Surgeon Dentist, Mr Levien is a registered Chemist and Druggest, and brings with him a considerable stock of chemicals. It will be seen at once the great advantage gained by retaining this gentleman as a resident among us, for the reason that perscriptions that heretofore had to be sent to Westport can now be made up here. Mr Levien intends giving Lyell a three months' trial before removing his family and finally settling down, so that it remains entirely with the residents of the district to extend the necessary assurances of support for that object. A public meeting will be held this evening in Mr Fennell's Hall to consider the matter, at which we hope to see a large attendance, and especially an interest taken in the movement by the mining portion of the community.
