The Lyell Times. SATURDAY, JULY 18, 1885.
The return of amalgam, obtained yesterday, from the plates, ripples and berdans at the Alpine battery, is H'JOo/.s for k 2i)o tons of stone crushed since the last general cleaning-up. j Application for cancellation of the United N.S.W. lease, was lodged at the Warden's Office hew on Tuesday last.; We understand that the grounds are : —| Non-payment of rent, non-compliance; with labour covenants, and no work in | progress. It is a special claim of GO acres. Hearing fixed for sth prox. Mr Corfield, clerk of the local Ji.M. and Warden's Courts, returned last week, from his leave of absence at Victoria. Mr 'Ferry, of the Reefton office, who relieved him, left for his head-quarters on Sunday last. The following are the Reefton battery returns for last week :—Keep-it-Dark, 4130zs amalgam ; Inker man, 18Gozs of amalgam. Mr O'Conor, M.H.R., in the House of Representatives last week, asked "would Government provide for the construction of a bridge over the Buller river at Lyell, that being the only large, dangerous, and unfordable river unbridged on the main road between Nelson, Greymouth and Westport'?" The reply was to the effect that the Government considered that it would be very expensive, but they would procure an estimate of the probable cost with a view to see if the work could possibly be undertaken. —Colonist. We are requested to announce, that a meeting of those favourable to the formation of a local Amateur Dramatic Club, will be held in the School-room here, on Tuesday evening next, at 7.80 p.m. The initiative having been actively taken up, and a large number of names given in as members, there should be no serious obstacle in the way of success. At the meeting, the Club will be formed, officers elected, and preliminaries arranged for an early start. We hope to see a good attendance present; for an institution of the kind, could be made the means oi accomplishing some good just now—the District Hospital, a public Library and the Fire Brigade funds, are all deserving of public support. Mr E. J. O'Conor, Member for Buller, who is now in Wellington attending Parliament, has been so indisposed oi late as to require the attendance of Di Grace. We are glad to hear, that, according to the last accounts, he is making good progress towards rapid recovery. Nos. 1 to 6 (inclusive) sections of work in connection with repairs and alterations to Buller road, have been let by the County Couneil to R. Fitz-norman. Nos 7 and 8, Flax-bush, and Lyell punt, respectively, to F. Junker. The tender o: C. Weekes, for the construction of 11 chains more of Eight Mile road has alsc been accepted—price £54.
The Manuka Flat Company is about to erect a workmen's camp close to the tunnel where operations ar ■ being started. This will save a deal of time and trouble in to and fro. We understand the men are repairing and putting the tunnel in order. The striking of a payable lead in this flat is a consummation anxiously looked for ; and even a moderate success in that direction, would soon put a brighter aspect on alluvial mining in the district. The Rev. Mr Spencer, will arrive here from Keeftou on Tuesday next, lor the purpose of holding the usual services in this portion of his district. On Wednesday, there will be a service at Lyell Creek, the distance to Lvell, being rather far at this season of the year. Next evening, Thursday, Service will be held in St. Matthew's, in the township. The Annual Meeting of Parishioners will be held afterwards, at which, the regular business, and the election of a new Committee and Vestry-men will be dealt with. We feel sure that the rev. gentleman will be glad to see a good number ptesent; for the attendance on such occasions, is a pretty certain indication as
to the amount of energy and interest! being displayed in promoting Church i matters. j. The Wilmott Comedy Company arrived 1 here on the 10th, and opened with 1 " Withered Leaves," songs and dances, : and a farce, on Saturday night. There \ : was an excellent house, but somehow the ; play went rather li it, and the want of j i suitable music, and ordinary stage accessories had their usual effect in makin r ! ! a lot ot the performers efforts, almost ineffectual. Certainly, it is vavy kind of i the members of the School Committee to i allow the use of the room on such oc- j I casions, but, at the best, the available space fee, for performances of the kind, . is too limited. Even the announcement, ' that the highly popular comedy " The j Guv'nor " would be put on, on Monday night, did not draw anything like a fair house; but still, the members played I their best, and made a good impression. I Next night, Tuesday, " Delicate Ground " I and " Founded on Fact," were produced |to a thin audience. Soma songs were also given, bat as far as we " may go in the assertion of a fact " the vocal line is not a strong point with this company; especially considering there was no accompaniment. We hope other travelling companies will take the hint, and, if inclined to " show " here, only arrange for one night, "billing" a week before- [, hand. ; I Under the " Registration of Electors Act, 187 ( J," the rolls of persons qualified I jto vote at elections of members of the ; j House of Representatives, are subject to 1 periodical revision by the different RegisI trars ; and we understand that with re-
t gard to the one affecting this place, the • j local police have been taking account of , j the Hames of all registered parties who 1 may have removed away to other places j —thus becoming disqualified. These, of , course, will be struck off, in compiling the 5 new roll. Voters whose names appear 3 on any roll, under the residential qualifi--3 cation, and who may have subsequently s removed to another district, are, after 1 having resided in the name fur one . month, entitled to the right of being enf rolled as electors thereof. Any person f wishing to l»e thus transferred from one $ roll to another, must apply to the registrar 1 of the district in which he formerly rey sided, and obtain a certificate : this, and a declaration in the form prescribad—- •, made by the applicant, are then to le r forwarded on to the person having charge f of the roll in the place where the voter r is now residing; and registration follows, . as though the party had been located r there for the usual period—six months. We learn with regret that the severe t indisposition of Mr Thomas Bruce and Mr Charles Fraser has rendered desirable their removal to the Keefton Hospital. e There are at present twelve inmates at the ». institution. —Inangahua Herald.
