The Lyell Times. SATURDAY, JULY 11, 1885.
The general cleaning-up at the United Alpine battery for the month ended on Saturday last, gave a return, from all sources, of 7940zs ol retorted gold, from 828 tons of stone,—the splendid average of over 19dwts per ton. This parcel of metal is only 4 ounces short of the return for the previous cleaning-up, although, the quantity of quartz crushed for that occasion, exceeds this last month's output, by 231 tons. The Company pays a dividend to-day, of one shilling per 32,000 th share,—equal to £IGOO. The usual, monthly sittings of the R.M. and Warden's Courts, have been adjourned to Wednesday, the 22nd inst., at 10 o'clock in the forenoon. The following are the Reefton battery returns for last week :—Keep-it-Dark, 3320zs amalgam; Inkerman, 2410zs amalgam for eight days' crushing. The National Bank will open here to-day, for the transaction of ordinary banking business. We are compelled to hold our mining report over until next week. Attention is drawn to the announcements in our advertising columns, pertaining to the various works for which tenders, closing on Monday afternoon next, are called for by the County Council. The alterations in, and improvements to the Buller road is a muchneeded work, and we understand is bein» done by the General Government. Then there is the extension of the Eight Mile track for 11 chains,—another welcome item, as, immediately on its' completion, another of the leader claims in that locality will connect with a battery plant, and so be enabled to crush. The Directors of the Manuka Flat Co., held their first meeting on the 4th inst., all the Lyell members and Mr A. Horn, of Westport, being present. Mr John Fennell, was elected Chairman of Directors. Mr Ingli.s, the legal manager, reported registration complete, and it was decided o commence operations ©n the ground, forthwith. The site chosen for a start, is
we believe, in an old tunnel in the vicinity of Scotty's Creek, and which is already driven towards the flat, for upwards of 200 feet, in a south-easterly direction. Two men are employed for the first month, —Mr J. Bray having charge of the work. The Willmott Comedy and Dramatic Company arrived here yesterday, and, as is announced in our advertising columns, will appear for the first time to-night. The attractive programme to be presented is a varied one, and certainly of a kind which will at once suit the popular taste ; whilst the high professional repute of the talented members of this numerous Company, and the favorable impressions they have made among play-goers, wherever they have visited, should all result in a crowded house, and an appreciative audience. During one month recently, the officers ot the Fishmongers' Company seized, at and near Billingsgate market, no fewer than GG tons of fish as unlit for human food.
