POLICE PROTECTION.

(To the Editor.) Sir,—Knowing you are always ready to ventilate and give every publicity to that affecting the publie interest and wellbeing, I take this opportunity, which I venture to think you will agree with me is a most fitting one, of enquiring how it is, we are so frequently left for days togother, entirely without police protection, ; or, in fact, anything in the shape of a j means of preserving law, order, and the i public peace ? It is no uncommon thing j for the local constable to be ordered off to ! some other station, just when there may jbe more than ordinary need for his i services here. The last occasion of the ! kind ooeured in the wesk ending 21st inst., during which he was only present for one night during the whole of the w-ek, and it is no secret that things occurred, and scenes mignt be witnessed, which, should in no way, be tolerated in this, or any other place. Ido not wish to exaggerate matters, but I have numbers with me in thinking that the time for Lyell to be left withoit a peace officer, has not quite arrived yet.—Yours &c, Paterfamilias. [Paterfamilias appears to take a rather severe view of his subject. From what we know of the Inspector who has charge of the district, he is not likely to under-rate the necessity for police supervision at Lyell. On the occasion particularised by our correspondent, an emergency had arisen at Keefton, and to maiutain efficiency there during the holiday season, it was necessary to take officers from other places.
