The Lyell Times. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 1885.

A will-organised move, is at last being made in the direction of having Manuka Flat thoroughly well prospected, and it is gratifying to know, that an association bat already been formed, in order that the works and the operations connected therewith, shall be carried on systematically. The present depression in all matters pertaining to alluvial mining, is a good argument as to the urgent need which exists for enterprise of the kind indicated; whilst the very favorable goldbearing features which the locality in question possesses, will certainly eombine in forming a stong claim for attention and support upon all, local and outsiders, having anything of an interest in the future of the whole district. When the Premier, and the Minister of Mines were here a lew weeks ago, they entertained the matter very favorably, and recommended that organised action should be tak'U locally, when, doubtless, Government would subsidise the work. Since then, Mr O'Conor, M.H.K. visited Lyell, and the deputation which met kirn to .••present local wants, pointed out the importance ot the undertaking contemplated, and suggested that if the County Council would also give a subsidy, the idea could be successfully carried out. Mr O'Conor concurred, and we are glad to see that these representations have resulted in the Council promising a subsidy of £250. There will, thus, be three Bources irom which actual prospecting expenses will be drawn;-the Government, County Conncil, and the members of the Association themselvef. There are to be 30,000 shares in the Association, of which upwards of 28,000 have already been subscribed for in Westport and Lyell. A provisional directory has been appointed for the present, to arrange preliminaries, and it may be reckoned, with unity of purpose, everyone ail together in the matter, and no wavering or hanging fire, that the objects of the Association will be fully attained.
