Cairo, January 28. Latest reports from El Metemneh show that the enemy numbered 7000. Their loss is estimated at 2000. That ot the British is 21 killed and about 100 wounded. Sir H. Stewart has been raised to the rank of Major-General. General Earl telegraphs that it is doubtful whether any fighting will occur before the column reaches Berber. He reports that the uncles of Sulieman Bey, under whose orders Colonel Stewart and party were murdered, have submitted to him. January 30. Later telegrams have been received here reporting that the Arabs made an attack upon General Earle's eolumn, but were repulsed by the cavalry. The latter subsequently attacked the rebels, and forced them to retreat t» Barti.
