SPORTING.

N"EWS AND NOTES. The Park Handicap, the principal event at the Napier Park Raoing Club's meeting on Saturday, provided more than usual interest, from tho fact that the field included seven candidates for the New Zealand Cup. The winner. Toki, put up the best performance for which he has yet been responsible, and he may earn further distinction in good company. Montana was well backed, and showed improved foam, though he does not appear to bo quite so good as his admirers once considered him. Sir Alba shaped fairly well, especially as he was not much fancied, but the displays of Multiply, Beltane, Settlor and Whakahoki left something to be desired. In the case of Multiply, however, improvement may bo exnected, while it -is in his favour that he is one of the small band of horses in the race with solid qualifications for a. two-mile journey. It cannot be said that the running at papier Park drew very marked attention to any of the candidates, but the meetings hold so far this season have thrown very little light on the two-mile race. The two-year-old filly, Lingerie, who. won the Juvenile Handicap at Isapier Park on Saturday, is by Finland— Finerv, by Birkenhead—Bijou, by Medallion—Sapphire, the dam of Phaethon. Bluefire and Mannlicher. Lingerie was bred by Mr T. H. Lowry. and was sold in Auckland at the beginning of this vear for 90gs. The filly is credited with being a brilliant galloper, and in this respect she resembles her dam, who, was exceptionally last, though she could only go for a few furlongs.

At the start of the Trial Hack Handicap at the Napier Park Racing Club s meeting on Saturday, Hymenaous got rid of "his jockey, J. Buchanan, who had two ribs fractured' and was bruised about tho head and shoulder. The injuries are not serious, but they will keep Buchanan out of the saddle for some time.

, There was an inquiry at Napier Park on Saturday in connection with the Taradale Hurdle Handicap, in which Nicornav ran round the second hurdle and was milled up. It transpired that a stirrup "leather broke, and the jockey was unable to keet» the horse on the course. The trainer and rider wero both cautioned for not having thenracing gear in proper condition. The Auckland jockey, J. £Shea, was on his way to Napier on Friday, when he received word that his brother had died suddenly, and he returned home at once.

As a result of his win in the Park Stakes at the Napier Park meeting on Saturday, Toki has incurred a 51b penalty for the New Zealand Cup. bringing, his weight up to 65t,121b. According to a cable message from Sydney regarding the postponement or tho Australian Jockey Club's meeting on account of the rain which fell at the eud of last, week, this was the first time it had been necessary to postpone tho Derby. It was. however, not the first time 'that rain had interfered with oneof the club's big meetings. In April of Inst year, during the progress of tho autumn fixture, heavy rain fell after ,the second day's racing on Easter Monday, with tho result that no further racing was nossible till Saturday, the meeting being concluded on the following Monday.
