SUMNER BURGESSES' ASSOCIATION.

MONTHLY MEETINO

The monthly meeting of the Sumner Burgesses' Association was hold in the Town Hall on Saturday evening. There was a e or '<l attendance, and "the president (llx H. Buttle, Sen.) occupied the chair. As no reply had been received from the Postmaster-General with, regard to the suggested alterations in the sites and charges of the telephone -cabinets, it was decided to instruct the secretary to write again about the matter. The necessity for a lamp on the pier was triscussed. In reply to a question, Mr H, JB\ Roberts stated that the Borough Council was at present taking: no action in the matter.

ly the time for such matters now, and i he thought, with Mr Roberts, that the action of the council was & wj ae one. The following resolution was carried unanimously :--" That it be a suggestion to the Borough Council that tie Mayor and councillors extend a formal welcome to all men returning from active service." A recent accident at the pier, whereby a child fell from the decking to the sand below, was discussed, and Councillor 11. F. Roberts was asked to brins the matter, wj ■well as the question of open gates at the Mid of the pier, under the notice of the Borough Council. Mr Roberts spolco of the heavy lists of wounded in the papers, and slated that Sumner afforded particular advantages to returned men. He emphasised the necessity of having a ..sanatorium for convalescent soldiers in the borough. There wore several suitable buifdingii, and something should be done. Mr Roberts and the president were ap. pointed a sub-con.mittee to wait on the Oanftrbury Patriotio Committee, with a view to making initial inquiries on the matter, and leport to the next meeting. , Several members present expressed their legret that Sumner had mado no local effort to raise fund 3 for " Our Day.".
