FENDALTON SCHOOL.

PROPOSED NEW PLAYGROUND. • A meeting of householders was held in the Fendalton Schoolroom last evening to discuss the matter of obtaining a hew playground for the school. .Mr ? J'. Thornton, chairman of f the School Committee, presided over a x>oor attendance. The chairman said that for a great ‘ number of years they had considered the present playground very unfavour- '■ uhlo. ’ A piece of land on the ride 01 the’ school, comprising two acres, muld be obtained at a cost of £9OO. Tno Education Hoard had been apjk cached on thq matter, but it could not do anything until £225 had been raised by the district, lie thought it would bo a splendid idea to procure the proposed laud, and it would also be yiuucn better tor tno sanitary arrange- "• tnonts. If the householders were enthusiastic in the matter, and helped the committee, possibly the land could be obtained. , In reply to a question, the chairman said that at present there were about 100 scholars on the school toll. Mr £l* W.‘ Candy said that if they Went thoroughly into the matter he was certain they , could purchase the land. They must look to the health of ' the school children. The school • roll was sure to increase in the. future. He moved that the land should bo acquired, i and .•that a committee should be< appointed • for the purpose of obtaining tho mouev ■ fqr the purchase. < Mr.S. H. Beckett' seconded the motion. . Mr J. T. Martin said it was not possible to obtain land at a lower price, than that proposed. Several members of'the Education Board had visited ’he land, and had recognised that it should be acquired, but owing to;tho finances' of the board it was impossible for them to buv it outright. Auy parent who had children at school should not, imi the risk of allowing them to play on the present playground, and the par-ents-should therefore ’help to buy tuc land. , Mr N. J. Wilkin contended that ilreland was absolutely 1 necessary, r He thought that a personal canvass should be made tn the househoftlers. The 1 niotiqn was carried unanimously. It was decided that those present should, form themselves into a canvassing committee, with uower to add, in order to carry out the work.
