ITALY’S CAMPAIGN

ON THE CARSO.

AUSTRIANS’ DESPERATE

POSITION.

Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received September 28, 7 p.m.)

HOME, September 27

A semi-official message says:—The eastern part of tho Carso plateau gradually widens towards the south, hence tho onemy's persistent attempts to retake San Grado di Merna and other important hills, because any serious extension of the successive Austrian defensive lines further to the rear will necessitate the employment of larger bodies of troops, which the Austrians are obliged to withdraw to other points.
