SPRINGS COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. Tho Springs County Council met at Springston on Tuesday; present—Messrs M. F. Evan (chairman), J. W. Kime, I. Andrew,H, Fnnnett, C. Wolfe and G. H. W. Stoddart. Mr J. A. Henloy, Lincoln, asked the council - to furnish him with the -names of all ratepayers in that portion of the county west of . ■the Southbridge railway line. A meeting j, of ratepayers had agreed that some alter? otion was required in the . district as regards ridings, and that in the event of tho alter-, ation not being made an effort should. b* made to have a largo portion, of the Spring* County included in the Paparua County. Mr ; Henley also made a complaint that the coun-. oil had raised the rates at the request of * small meeting of ratepayers. The chairman and members took exception to Mr Henley’a reference to the increase in rates. Tho chairman said that it has been pointed out several times by himself and clearly explained in the Press that the council had decided to raise its Patriotic Fund quota by ant increase in rates, at the request of a properly advertised meeting of ratepayers. Members of the council, unanimously supported the chairman’s remarks, and it was decided to make a protest against the statement in the letter. It was resolved to supply the information asked for. ’ Mr P. Crump, Springston, complained that . a culvert below his place was not larg# enough, and threatened the council with « legal action in the event •of his property being damaged by water. Members who hna, inspected the culvert expressed the view that it was large enough, but that the creek below Mr Crump’s farfn was not clear of obstructions. The Audit Department informed the council that it could not make grants to tha countv Bed Cross branches. Tho council decided to improve, the road at Chamberlain's corner, Ellesmere, to make it more safe for motor traffic.
