PERSONAL NOTES. Widespread regret was expressed through the community at the news received yesterday of .the death.in action of Lieutenant Rupert George Hickmott, who went to Franco with the Tenth Reinforcements, .'lieutehant Hickmott was only twenty-three years of age. At the conference last night between representatives of the Canterbury and the City and Suburban Cricket Associations the chairman (Mr A. Cant) made feeling reference to loss cricket.had sustained by the death of Lieutenant Hickmott. He said Lieutenant Hickmott had been one, of the finest types of cricketers Canterbury had produced.' It was doubtful if a better outfield' had been seen in Christchurch, whilst as a batsman he was quite in the front rank, and he was also a useful change bowler. He felt sure the City and Suburban Asso-
ciation delegates would agree with these sentiments. He moved—" That this meeting of cricketers deplores the death in, action of the late Lieutenant R. G. Hickmott, who was not only'one of the finest exponents of the-game Christchurch has produced, but one whose example on the field was at all times one that worthily upheld the traditions of Canterbury cricket, and that those present extend' to his sorrowing relatives their sincercst sympathy." Mr E. H. Andrews, the president of'the City and Suburban Association, seconded the motion and endorsed the chairman's remarks, adding that his association was not only proud of Lieutenant Hickmott as a cricketer, but were even more proud that he had given his lifo for hi.s country.
