SPORTING.
NEWS AND NOTES. The Amberley Racing Club's meeting will be held to-day, and it looks lino providing some interesting sport. A special train will leave Christchurch at 9.46 a.m.> arriving back at 7.55 p.m. First acceptances for the New Zealand Trptting Cup are due on Wednesday.' The outside of the course proper at Riccarton was open for fast work on Saturday, and provided fast going. The majority of the galloping was over Bhort courses, and there was nothing of special interest in the proceedings. Daytime beat Pyjama over half a mild.' Ayeliffe and Ogier ran a mile, the former having a slight advantage at the tnd. Tantalus sprinted five furlongs, but was stopping at the finish. Ascalaphus shaped well in a half-mile sprint with Sir Hamilton. Battle Ere and San Sebastian were both moving freely in a gallop over a mile. Malvolia and Sainisen. separately, sprinted half a mile snlartiy, while Kiltess beat Trevana over a similar distance in slower time. Masterstroke and Harlequin wore responsible for a fair gallop over five furlongs, and Comely ran six in: good style. Disdainful and Wartlancer.were together at the end of a useful galilop over six furlongs, while Chrysotis assisted Snub over the last part of. a similar task.. ■Mescal (P. Wormald) was taken out on .Saturday for a school over the
hurdles, but ho showed ft dislike for tho obstacles, and the attempt had to be abandoned. ■ Darby "Paul (D. M'Kny) was sent out for a school over a few fences on Satuwlay. fie scrambled over one brush and then refused at the double, subsequently jumping a hurdle. Fiery Cross bears a bright appearnr.ee and his. two .racos at Ashburton have evidently done him good. On Saturday I}6 "was worked over half a mile, without being asked to do his best and he got through his task in an attractive manner. Marc Anthony is going on nicely in his preparation for the New Zealand Cup, and is in the best of health at present. Ho was allowed to stride along with some sound pace work on the plough on Saturday. , . A throe-year-old brother to Gunrest, by Calibre—Tinwald Beauty, is the latest addition to W. M'Donald's team. The four-year-old gelding Treadfire, who lias been raced on lease by J>. Morafhan for several rnontns, has been returned to his owner, Mr A. W. Rutherford, jun., and is again an inmate of A. M'Aulay's stable. Tho son of Treadmill—Fire Queen showed .some promise early in his career, but for some time past ho has shaped very disappointingly. H. Cutts arrived home from the north on Saturday with Good Hope ' and Wrestler, who had no engagements on the second day of the Wanganui Jockey Club's meeting. While in tho enclosure, from the start of the Durie Hack Handicap at Wanganui on Thursday, the trainer, HHickey, had his jaw broken, as a re--1 suit of a knock from Cleft s head. The Winter Cup winner, Cherry Blossom, broke a blood vessel while doing a gallop at Wanganui last wee*., and is now having a rest. Mi- Frank Moore, the well-known Wauganui breeder, who went into camp some timo ago, has been discharged on account of his health. ! The Svdney sportsman, Mr D. U. Seaton, looks like playing a prominent part with his three-year-olds this seasou. On Saturday he won the Hawkesbury Guineas with Eastcourt, while, a week earlier ho was successful in the Rosehill .Guineas with Wolaroi. Eastcourt's fcire, Earlston, is an imported horse by Love Wisely (son of Wisdom) from Monday, by Wonlock—SottUng Pav, by Doncaster—Vex, a to Gafopin. On tho other sido, Eastcourt's pedigree is not so satisfactory. His dam, Lady Ruonalf, is by Ruenalf —Amera, by Martini Henry—Vain Glorv, by Chester—Vanity, by The Top —Flirt, by New Warrior —Dozey. Thi» is as far as the pedigree goes with any satisfaction, Fozey being described as by Bookworm from a Cap-a-Pie mare, who in turn was by Bay Camerton. Despite tho obscure pedigree, this family has neon responsible for a number of winners, Dandy and Valutas, two brothers to Amera, being very useful performers some years ago.
