Progressing favourably—Private F. : ) Forlies. ' , PERSONAL NOTES. • Last mail brought news of the death of Corporal Walter Evan Cookson nr France. It appears that on the night of July 19 ho was in charge of a post when the trench was enfiladed by German shell fire. He was evidently killed by the concussion,, as .the, two wounds he sustained were not sufficient to cause death. . . News was received in Ashburton on Saiurdav that Major A. J. Childs, eldest sou "of Mr Harry Childs, of Ashburton, and a partner in ihe funi of Guilds and Sons, general smiths and wheelwrights, had been killed v in action in Franco on September 15. Major Childs, who was born in Chertsey, was thirty-eight years of age and had been residont in Ashburton for about twenty- >' five years before going to the war. 'From a youth he had taken a keeu: interest in- volunteering, and forniany years was a member of the Ashburton Rifle Corps. He joined as a private, graduallv rose to the rank of captain, and was* in command of the Ashburton Rifles for three years. He sat • and successfully passed his exarnma!tiOtt for major, obtained his commission, ancß, after Major Barclay, of Waimate, left on a visit tp Russia, Major Childs had command of the then South Canterbury Battalion of New Zealand Rifles. He subsequently enlisted and was to have trone to the front with the lour\h Reinforcements, but was kept back at Trentham, and finally ..left as major u? command of one section, of .the A;ew Zealand Rifle Brigade. Major Childs had two cousins killed at ■ GaUipoli. Two of his brothers, Privates O. n. and A. R. Childs, are m the £ng Vine in France. Major Childs was a valuable aud earnest worker m connection with St Stephen's, Anghcan Church. Ashburton. He was a member of the vestry and was also .a■ P*™"*;-. ent member of the local Church of England Men's Society. He was married and leaves a widow and five children. • Captain L.,S. Jennings, taliott, killed in action, was well known inVristchurch. He was educated at llie Kelson Boys' College, where he distinguished himself as a student, and was a member of the first fifteen and eleven. He continued a very successful career at Canterbury, College, where he , graduated with and was also a member of the football team and a keen and enthusiastic tennis player. ,; Lieutenant J. E. Cuthill, reported,' missing, is the well known Dunedin University, Otago and New Zealand re-.-. presentarivo footballer. He was a student at the Otago University and a member of the New Zealand team that toured California and British Columbia in 1913. At GaUipoli he was reported wounded. At the time of enlisting hq. 1 was teaching at Mosgiel. .•
