CANTERBURY MICROSCOPICAL SOCIETY.
The Canterbury Microscopical. Socie'ty met on Thursday evening-'-.in Mr E. E. Stark's rooms, Mr C. B. Morris presiding over a good attendance of members and visitors. In continuation of the arranged course, papers were read by Messrs Williams,and Steele on "Volvos" and " Paranccium" The structure, method of reproduotSon anc the habitat of the species was ably described by the speakers, their remark: being fully illustrated by a number ol drawings. In tho discussion which fol lowed, the question of " Instinct versus Intelligence," was debated, and it was suggested that an evening .should be sot apart for a fuller discussion of the matter, as the subject was one that was engaging the attention of scientists in other parts of the world. Mr Morris described the local species of " Vol vox " and "Paranccium," illustrating his remarks by blackboard drawings. During the evening a number of slides on various subjects were shown by Mr Stark through tho society's lan-. tern, and wero ably described by Mr Morris. As showing tho usefulness of the society, tho greater portion of the slides shown wero prepared by members, special mention being made of the work of the youngest member of the society, Master Lindsay, a lad in his 'te'ens, whose work, Mr Morris stated, compared very favourably with any he had seen. The meeting concluded with votes of thanks to the various speakers, to Mr E. E. Stark, and to Mr Allen for his gift of pointors and rubbers for the use of the society.
