The Pateena will ho the ferry steamer todav. This morning the Paloona will arrive from Dunedin, and after discharging her Australian cargo she will proreed to Wellington and Melbourne. Having passed Stephen s Island at 1.31 p.m. yesterday, the Ivaramu is due in Lyttelton to-day.

Owing to tho presence of a strong southeast galo tho ferry steamer Maori did not reach Lyttelton until 7 55 a.m. yesterday, too lato to connect with tho first express to Invercargill. The Mararoa, is due to arrive from Port. Chalmers on Thursday to take the ferry running in placo of the Maori, wLich will proceed south.
IVHAKATANE HARBOUR IMPROVEMENTS. Satisfactory progress is being made in tho harbour improvement works at IVbakat-ane, according to Air H. H. Metcalfe, the engineer (snvs a northern exchange). The tYhakataiio River has been so confined that a channel has been scoured giving a depth- at full tide, of 10ft in tho shallowest places. Tho whole scheme allows for the expenditure of £2.3,000 of which only £SOOO has been spent, almost two years' work having been done, tho channel at tho commencement being blocked. There are now prospects that in good weather the channel will he navigable at low tide. PALOONA’S TRANSHIPMENTS. Tho Union Company's Paloona has been delayed at Dunedin, and in consequence she will not reach Lyttelton until to-day. The vessel has transhipments ex the steamers Kashgar and Kormola, the principal lines being the following:—l32 packages tea, 1 Gib printed matter, 5 bags cocoa, 20 bundles fibre, 29 packages coconut, 20 packages wine, 30 bags plaster. 2 bags coffee, 23 packages nails, 40 bags rice, 45 pigs lead, 20 cases blacking, 2 octaves sherry, 4 casks juice, 2400 bags superphosphate, 42 bag 3 macaroni, 4 cases tobacco. 100 boxes sultanas, 0 eases tile, 117 bags onions, 11 casks flower-pots, 140 packages rubber goods, 10 drums cable, 223 bags sultanas, .3 barrels oil, 40 cases sulphuric acid, 10 sacks rice meal, 14 sacks canary seed, 14 bags plumbago, 4 bales leather, 7 cases essence, 8 packages lampware, 5 cases corks, 20 casks empty bottles, fi cases hydrogen peroxide. 18 bars iron, 45 cases lemon, 10 kegs drugs, 40 bags salt, OS ingots tin, 70 packages fruit and a largo quantity of sundries.
