LYTTELTON METHODIST CHURCH.
WELCOAIE TO REV J. PARSONS. PRESENTATION TO REA r C. OLLIVER. Ou the departure some twelve months ago of Chaplain A. Alitcholl with the Seventh Reinforcements the Rev C. A. Olliver filled the vacancy temporarily in tho pulpit of the Alethodist Church, Lyttelton, hut recently tho Rev J. E. Parsons, of Gtakuhu, Auckland, was appointed, and last evening opportunity was taken to introduce Air Parsons to the parishioners, and also to say farewell to Air Olliver. The function was held iu the Excelsior Hall, which was well filled, amongst those present being the Rev A. C. Lawry, president of the Metludist Church,* and the Rev F. Peters. The circuit steward, Air J. Pitcaitkly, presided. The chairman said, that the gathering that evening was for a twofold purpose. Firstly, it was intended to introduce the Rev J. E. Parsons, and secondly to give a hearty send-off to the Rev C. A. Olliver, who had nobly carried out the work of the circuit until the appointment of a permanent minister. Air Olliver's association would nob be forgotten. Ho had paid particular attention to the care of the sick and the needy, and had also established a firm foundation for Air Parsons to commence his good work. In extending a hearty welcome to Mr Parsons, tho chairman said ho could assure him that in taking up his duties he wc*uld have tho assistance and co-operation of adherents to tho church. The church in Lyttelton had had hard times, but matters were showing an upward tendency and ho hoped under. Air Parsons’s regime they would still further improve. The Rev A. C- Lawry paid a high tribute to the qualities manifested by the new minister, and assured tho audience that he should bo capable o* doing liis utmost to‘uplift their spiritual faculties. He trusted that Gou would enable both Air and Airs Parsons to extend their good work in Lvttelton.
The Rev J. J. Bates (St John’s), Rev F. Peters (Papanui), and Alessrs J. R. Webb, M. J. Miller and J. T. Norton also spoke. The Rev J. E. Parsons, on rising to reply, was loudly applauded. He said ho was looking forward to a happy time iu Lyttelton. Ho urged tho people to believe in the church ana its religion and so enable God’s Word to be pushed on. Subsequently Air F. Gnrlick, on behalf of the adherents to the church, presented the Rev C. A. Olliver with an umbrella as a mark of appreciation o* bis work sinco the departure of Chaplain Alitche.il.
