SCOTT STATUE.
PREPARING FOR PEDESTAL. Passers by tho lawn on tho banks of the Avon near Worcester Street bridge yesterday saw two or three men busily excavating, and many guesses were made as to tho object, tho most popular being that _ something was being done in connection with tne Avon improvement proposals. But tho excavation is really a preparation for the foundations of the pedestal for the Scott memorial statue. The pedestal is to weigh over forty tons, but it is not proposed to put the foundations lower than two feot. Thirty-nine cases recently arrived at Lyttelton, but whether these contain all or only part of the granite pedestal is not vet known. Nor, apparently, is the exact whereabouts of the statue of the late Captain Scott known, but the memorial is expected to arrive soon. Tho statue, which will show the explorer in full “travelling” costume, will face the City Council Chambors.
