Dr Thomas I. Bennett, son of Mr A. W. Bennett, general manager of the Now Zealand Snipping Company, has obtained a commission as first lieutenant in the Royal Army Medical Corps, and is in camp at Tidworth, Eng land.

Mr John Bruce, called "the father of Cheltenham," who died in Wellington last week, was born in the Hutt Valley, and went with the .Hutt settlers to thei Sahdon Settlement in the 'seventies, joining his brother Alexander in farming. In the early 'eighties ho sold out to his brother and settled in Cheltenham, where he had revsided ever since. His family comprised three daughters and one son, all 1 of whom are at home with their mother. Mr Bruce had extensive experience on local bodies. Ho was for many years on tho Kiwitea County Council, retiring from that body three years ago. Ho had been chairman of the Cheltenham Dairy Company for some years, and helped that corporation to t, sound position. He was one.of.ihrf representatives.of the Kiwitea. Countj on the Polmerston.; J. Hospital Board, and held that office at the time of his death. He always filled a leading position on the cricket, football, anc sports clubs of his district.
