TWO GERMAN PRISONERS
. NAMES NOT OFFICIALLY DIVULGED. [Per Phess Association.] AUCKLAND, January 4. Two German prisoners from Samoa, in addition to F. E. N. Gaudin, were brought to Auckland by the s.s. Navua to-day. The Auckland military authorities stated on inquiry that they Were not aware of the names of the prisoners nor of the nature of the offences for which they were undergoing imprisonment. After the arrival of the prisoners they ' were taken to Mount Eden gaol. On being approached the prison officials informed a ,{* Herald" representative that although they knew the names of the prisoners and the charges against them these could not be divulged without the'permission of the Under-Secretary of' the Department, strict instructions tib this effect having been issued. :*'.lt is understood that the prisoners were sentenced for breaches of thei regulations governing the conditions tinder which Germans may change their place of residence at Samoa
r INVALIDED SOLDIERS. | Four officers and twenty-five soldiers Returned to Auckland from Samoa by the Navua. In the majority of cases they hare been invalided home. Among the officers was Colonel C. Harcourt Turner, commanyler. of the Fifth Wellington Regiment, who broke his right leg in a trap accident Rome five weeks ago. He has been invalided home temporarily. Major Bernard Head, of the Fifth (Flintshire) Battalion of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, who was second in command of the Wellington Regiment, and Captain Redmond Nevill (Reserve of officers, Princess Victoria's Royal Irish Fusiliers), who is adjutant of the regiment, also returned. Lieutenant A. J. Tole, of the Third Auckland Regiment, was among those invalided Sergeant Majors Meecham, Hendy and' ICastbury returned from Samoa on transfer. The southern officers and men left for Wellington by the Main Trunk express.
