EXCHANGE OF PRISONERS
LONDON, January 3,
The Pope has telegraphed to tho Kaiser, beseeching him to secure an exchange of prisoners who are militarily unfit. The Kaiser replied that the Pope's desires were in accord with his own.
BELGIUM UNCONQUERED. AMSTERDAM, January 3. Cardinal Mcrcier, of Belgium, in a pastoral letter states that the occupied provinces are still unconquered. He said that Belgium owed allegiance to King Albert; only, but appealed to citiaess not to commit any hostile acts. EgJTAINED IN NEW YORK. NEW YORK, January 3. Ths New York authorities detained a German officer and. three reservists, on the information of a lawyer, who alleged that there was a conspiracy to secure a passage for the German reservists on a Norwegian steamer by means of fraudulent passports taken out by naturalised Germans. RAINS IN BRITAIN. LONDON, January 3. Heavy rains daily cause great discomfort in the Salisbury Plain and other training camps. INTERCESSION SERVICES. LONDON, January 3. Crowded intercession services were held in Protestant, Catholic and Russian Churches and chapels throughout Britain.
