BIG BATTLE IN MOUNTAINS. ENVER PASHA'S FAILURE. GREAT RUSSIAN VICTORY. By Telegraph—Press Atsoci».tion—Copyright' PETROGRAD, January 1: Enver Pasha, with a strong army, including ample artillery, began a march on Sarykamish (Armenia), at the 'beginning of last week, and attempted to overpower the garrison by rapid assault before the arrival of reinforcements. A portion of the garrison sortied, and over a fifteen miles front a battle began. Both sides were ohest deep in the snow. The Russians dividing, slowly retreated townrds both sides of the valley. When the Turks reached Sarykamish, the Russian reinforcements arrive ed and attacked the Turks on threa' sides, with only a narrow outlet to the rear through the mountains. Besides heavy casualties, the Turk* lost much new equipment, which was abandoned. This was Enver's first experience .as commander. He wan greatly depressed by tho defeat, and quitted the army, transferring th» command to General von Sanders. AN OFFICIAL REPORT. PETROGRAD, January 1.
