PROFESSIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. [D'rom Own Correspondent.] TIMARC, January 2. . For the second day of the South Canterbury Caledonian Society's fortieth annual gathering the weather was gloriously fine, a ccol breeze tempering the sun's heat. The New Zealand professional championship events wore keenly contested. A. W. Dormer won the milo in 4m in 29 U-ssec easily, and could have knocked seconds off the timo. Tho northern champion also appropriated the quarter-milo championship. P. O'Shea won tho mile and five-mile cycling championship events, but the long distance event was robbed of much interest through an accident, Griffen coming down owing to his back wheel collapsing. Ho landed unhurt on the grass bt in his fall bumped A. Bonis, who fell heavily on tho track and waa very much cut about the shoulder and hip. Later in the same race D. A. GoingX up ths back stretch Griffin moved up ou' Bonis and O'Shea, but O'Shea made a' great response and won by two lengths, taking the blue ribbon presented by tho secretary of the society.
