FIRES.
BUILDING BURNT AT LYTTELTON,
At 3.20 a.m. onSafrurday the Lj'ttelton Fire Brigade was called out to attend to a fire ia an unoccupied twostoreyed building in London Street, belonging to Mr F. Norton. The Brigade answered the call promptly, but it was found that tho fire had obtained a good hold. Thero was a satisfactory pressure of water availabks and, after about half an hour's strenuous fighting, the fire was subdued, and the safety of. the adjoining properties assured. Up till about a month ago, the building, which was ail old one, was used by a confectioner. The outbreak was observed by Constable Thomas, who gave tho alarm.
THE DUNEDIN FIRE. ;[Peb Paras Association.] DUNEDIN, January 2. The damage caused by the fire in Biug, Harris and Co.'s premises is variously estimated at from £IO,OOO to £30,000. The insurance companiee concerned are:—-Royal, £5000j; South British and Royal Exchange,, each £4000; Norwich Union and Alliance, each £3500; New Zealand, Liverpool, and London and Globe and Sun, each £3000; Guardian, £2500; Commercial Union and Atlas, each £2000; Statu Fire and Lon3on and Lancashire, each £1500; United, £1000; Alliance, £SOO, The building is insured for £16,400, aui tho principal holder is the State Fir« Office, £BSOO. , The damage to the building, however, is comparatively small.
