DROWNED WHILE BATHING. [Per Press Association ] WANGANUI, January 1

A thirteen-year-old girl named Gwendoline Whiteford was drowned, in the river at Kaiwhaiki this afternoon. She and two other girls, named Tennant and Rutherford, were bathing, when they got. out of their depth and Bank.. Mr Merryweather dived and.' rescued two, but the girl Whiteford’s body was not found till two hours later.

MISHAPS AT PAHIATUA. [Per Press Association.] PAHIATUA, January 1. Several accidents occurred to-day. Denis M’Grath, a stable employee, fell from a loft and had an arm and a leg broken. A two-year-old boy named Williams, son of a , Mangatainoka settlor, was kicked by a horse and sustained a fractured jaw. Other minor cases are reported. •

MOTOR-OAR SMASH. [Per Press Association.] CARTERTON, January 1

A serious accident occured between Featherston and the Tauherenikau Racecourse to a new motor-car plying for hire. There were three passengers, of whom Michael D. Berry (Welliimton), and Kitty Pay-ton (Island Bay, Wellington) were badly -injured, and Thomas Hill was much shaken. Tho car was smashed to pieces. It appears that a motor-lorry going to Featherston and the car going to.the, races met on a bad road. Both tried to take a, good, part of the road when' the accident occurred. The victims wore taken back to Wellington hv the afternoon train.

YOOTi.G WOMAN DROWNED. [Per Press Association.] NELSON, January 1. A drowning fatality occurred at Pokororo this afternoon. Miss Stella Everett, aged twenty-four/ daughter of Air Albert Everett, lost lier life while bathing. It is presumed that she was seized hy an epileptic fit while in the water.

INVERCARGILL, January 1

Frank Cregan, aged twelve, was drowned in the Apaxima River' near Nightcaps, while bathing with another boy. The body was afterwards recovered. Deceased got out of his depth YOUNG WOMAN’S DEATH. DUE TO PULMONARY HAEMORRHAGE. An inquest was held at Heathcote Valley yesterday, before. Mr H. W. Bishop, District Coroner, touching the death of Elizabeth-Jane Geary, a single woman, aged twenty-four years, who died-at her home at Heathcote on the previous night. Eliza Geary, mother of the deceased, said that . her daughter had, been able to do her work, and take her meals regularly. Deceased had been treated for consumption about five years ago, but had been fairly well for the last four years. At about six 1 o’clock tho previous evening, as she and deceased were sitting down to tea, she heard’ deceased cough, and then haemorrhage began. Her daughter died in a few minutes. Dr C. H. Upham said that lie had never attended deceased, but had seen her occasionally, and had heard that she was subject to phthisis. He was of the opinion that, death was duo to pulmonary hiomorrhage. The Coroner returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence.

SUDDEN DEATH AT A PICNIC, Yesterday afternoon a man named George Wormald, residing in Inglis Street, Linwood, suddenly dropped dead at a picnic in a paddock at Mr G. J. Smith's residence at Opawa. The body was removed to the Morgue, and an inquest will be held at 12.30 p.m. today.

On Thursday evening, at Saltwater Creek, a boy about seven years of age, son of Mr John Brick, was kicked oii the side and back by a horse and susr tained serious internal injuries.
