In the moat, favourable weather the South Canterbury Caledonian Socioty’s fortieth annual gathering' was commenced at Tinw.ru to-day. There was a largo attendance at the Society's (splendid sports grounds, and all day athletes conlpetcd for championship honours. The faot that tho New Zealand professional championships had been allotted to the South Canterbury Centre added great interest to tho meeting, and it brought together competitors from all' over the Dominion. The sound of bagpipes was in tho air, and on: a. platform dancers old and young vied with each other for tho judges’ approval. In. tho foot races the greatest effort was that) of A. W. Dormer, the Auckland crack, in tho Half-mil? Handicap. __ Ho had previously won the chaxnpionship'ha.U-milo, having only one runner to disposo of. In the handicap Dormer Tan a great race, covering the first-quarter in 55, l-ssec, and the entire journey in lmiu 56Jeec. Next in order of merit was R. Fitzgerald's win in tho mile. Off the 125yds mark he covered tho distance in 4min llsec, and ns ho had to work his way through a large field it was a great performance. In the bicycle events honours went to P. Griffin, a North Inland rider, who rode strongly throughout and was able to command a great sprint at the business end. In tho three-milo championship pacers were used, and the pace was a cracker from the start. Griffin, by a great sprint which aroused the crowd’s enthusiasm, won by three lengths. Jn tho final of the Caledonian Wheel Race Gibson punctured a tyro wheu lying in 'a good position. In the handicap events ttho entiles were large, and so also were tho fields in nearly every case. Somo excellent finishes were seen, and the judges had more than one problem to solve. Only ono accident) marred tho day. In the final of the Mile Bicycle Handicap E. Tozer, riding wide at a bond, forced F. Shalders up on to tho fence and caused a nasty spill.
