PICNICS.

ELMWOOD SCHOOL.

The scholars attending the Elmwood School held their annual picnic on Saturday at Moaiknrara, when ihe weather Was ideal. A special tram started.. from Leinster Road lor the railway station, and at tile different stopping places the. number of passengers was augmented considerably. When the excursion train left the station there were about 570 passengers on board, including 430 scholars. For some time past the School Committee had been making very extensive arrangements in connection with the gathering, and as a result a most enjoyable time was spent. The recreation ground at Motukarara was utilised for the occasion, and it proved to be an ideal picnio place, the largo trees providing shelter from the hot sun. Games were played and many races run, both by the infants and by the children in the higher classes. An innovation at school picnics was introduced by supplying ice cream, and, though the task of providing over four hundred children with the luxury was no easy one, it-was accomplished to, the apparent satisfaction of all. The sports wore held under the auspices of Mr R. S, M’Kenzie, chairman of the School Committee, Mr J. R. Sinclair, head master, and Mr W. W. Garton, and they were assisted in an energetic* manner by members of the School Committee, and by the teachers. The party returned to Christchurch at 6.50 p.m., and loft by special trams for Leinster Road. Throughout the day the teachers were indefatigable in their attention to their charges, and the gathering passed off without a mishap of any description: Following are the results of the' sports: Bovs. —50yds under nine years—Keith Brown 1, J. HALSWELL SCHOOL. The Halswell School children held their annual treat at Purau on Thursday. The weather, although boisterous in the morning, turned out fine in the afternoon. The children were taken to the Show Grounds .in spring carts, where they boarded the train for Lyttelton, and were transferred to the John Anderson.
