A GUNSHOT WOUND. [Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, March 1. A young man named Leslie Mills was admitted to the Hospital on Saturday suffering from serious gunshot injuries. It is stated that the young man was in a shed at the back of a house in Park Avenue. The sound of a shot startled some residents in the vicinity and Mills was found bleeding profusely. He was taken to the Hospital. He is a ship’s steward, 4 twenty-eiglit years of age. A BATHING ACCIDENT. [Per Press Association.] GISBORNE, March 1. A young Maori named Pomare, who was bathing in tho Otoko stream last evening, essayed to dive in what appeared to be a suitable depth of water, but struck a rock. Ho was brought into town this morning and taken to the Hospital. His state is critical. FIREMEN’S LONG HOURS. [Per Press Association.] HAMILTON, February 28. At the inquest on John William Shannon, a fireman killed at the Frankton railway station, the evidence showed that he had been working twelve hours continuously. He was putting a brake on a truck when he was jammed between tho truck and a coal bin. The jury, in returning a verdict of accidental death, added a rider that they considered firemen’s hours were too long and they urged a reduction. AN UNLIGHTED DRAY. INQUEST ON MOTOR-CYCLIST [Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, March 1. An inquest was held yesterday at Petone concerning the death of I rank Revell, a motor-cyclist whose body was found on the roadside on Friday night. Tho deceased was employed as a fitter in the railway workshops. The evidence showed that a dray had been driven unligbted by Thomas Sheehan. The motorist evidently struck one of the shafts, which was broken and blood-stained. The horse was also cut about. The-Coroner returned a verdict that Revell died from injuries accidentally received through collision between his motor-cycle and a dray. Subsequently Sheehan was charged with being drunk while in charge of a cart, also with failing to have a light on the vehicle, and further that on February ■ 27 he had r been guilty of an omission resulting m the death of Revell. Sheehan was remanded till Wednesday.
* OTAGO NATALITIES, [Per Press Association.] DUNEDIN, March 1. Mrs Doocey, a resident of St Kilda, fell in Princess Street yesterday as the result of a collision with a drunken man and struck her head on the pavement. She appeared to be none the worse for the mishap and went shopping. An hour later 6he complained of pains in her head and was taken to the hospital where 1 paralysis set in, tho woman dying at 9 o’clock last night. An inquest w’ll be held. Ellen May Ross, five years of age, was drowned at Puketiraki yesterday. Her parents reside in Dunedin.
DEATH FROM POISON. [Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, February 28. At the inquest on William Coats, a verdict was returned that the deceased died from poison, self administered, while of an unsound state of mind. Coats was an old man, a widower, living happily with his daughter and son, unit had been despondent since a recent seizure.
i WOMAN’S SUDDEN DEATH. [Per Press Assooiation.l INVERCARGILL, March 1. A woman named Adamson, residing at Clifton, died suddenly yesterday. The circumstances point to poisoning and an inquest will be held.
ROAD RACE ACCIDENT. ' In the Kaiapoi Cycling Club’s road race on Saturday afternoon W. Crossan, of Christchurch, had ridden about three-quarters of a mile when the rim of his front wheel split and broke. At the time he was going .at a speed of nearly thirty miles an hour. He fell heavily to the ground and was picked up unconscious. A doctor ordered his removal to the Hospital. Crossan’s injuries consist of a large flesh wound on the head and. a gash on the forehead, and a badly torn ear. Yesterday his condition had improved considerably but it will probably be some days before he can leave for his home.
J. ‘ Howarth, while engaged in baling operations at the Kaiapoi Woollen Mills on Saturday received a deep cut in his side through a hook coming loose. ’ ■
