AXEMEN’S CARNIVAL.
CONTESTS AT AUCKLAND. [Per Press Association ] AUCKLAND, March 1.
Tho Exhibition Axemen’s Carnival was concluded on the Domain cricket grounds on Saturday afternoon. Among the events decided were the Now Zealand championship sawing events and the " world’s championship ” ohop. There were also Beveral bicycle and running races. A private running match over a distance of 160 yards for a purse of £l6O .and a trophy between H. H. Brinkmann and E. Lambert was won by the former by half a yard in 16 l-6sec. Following .wore tho results of the wood-chop-ping contests:
New Zealand Championship Single-handed Sawing, 20-inch leg—D. Pretty (Now Zealand), 1; W. Peck (Australia), 2; H. E. Sullivan 3. Time—sosec.
New Zealand Championship Double-handed Sawing, 20-inch log—E. Sims and O’Rorko 1; Carlson and Dwyin 2. Time—lo 2-ssec. Elliott Handicap Chop of £-100, 18-inch standing block—R. H. Sherry, 35scc, 1; J. Beazley, 3Jsec, 2; A. Pretty, 38sec, 3. A close and exciting finish. Time—24 2-ssec. World's Championship (underhand), 20-inch logs, ■ £2O—W. Peck 1; D. Pretty 2; C. O'Par ire 3. The Australian chopped magnificently and won with several seconds in hand. Tmo—lmin 49 l-sscc. Visitors’ Handicap Chop of £lO—M. Ahless 1, D. Pretty 2. J. Beazley 3. A' close finish. Time—6B 4-ssec.
